In this fully computer-animated fantasy from the creators of Antz, we follow the travails of Shrek (Mike Myers), a green ogre who enjoys a life of solitude. Living in a far away swamp, he is suddenly invaded by a hoard of fairy tale characters, such as the Big Bad Wolf, the Three Little Pigs, and Three Blind Mice, all refugees of their homes who have been shunned by the evil Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). They want to save their homes from ruin, and enlist the help of Shrek, who is in the same situation. Shrek decides to offer Lord Farquaad a deal; he will rescue the beautiful Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), who is intended to be Farquaad's bride. Accompanying Shrek on his adventure is the faithful but loquacious Donkey (Eddie Murphy), who has a penchant for crooning pop songs. The two must face various obstacles in order to locate the Princess, but they find their world challenged when she reveals a dark secret that will affect the group. Shrek is based on the children's book by William Steig, and features additional voice-work by Vincent Cassel, Cody Cameron, and Kathleen Freeman.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
"What kind of a knight are you?" the imprisoned princess asks of her unconventional rescuer. "One of a kind," the ogre replies. And so is Shrek, the compound-fractured fairy tale that ranks as 2001's box office champ, as well as the most successful non-Disney animated film ever. With its state-of-the-art computer animation, A-list voice cast, hit-heavy soundtrack, and subversively funny story (based on William Steig's book), it will live happily ever after on VHS and special-edition DVD. Mike Myers is the voice of Shrek, a repulsive but good-hearted green ogre. His solitude is shattered by an influx of fairy tale characters banished by the diminutive Lord Farquaad from his kingdom. To rid his swamp of these intruders, Shrek offers to rescue Farquaad's (John Lithgow) bride-to-be, Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from a tower guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. Accompanying him on his quest is Donkey -- who speaks with Eddie Murphy's voice and galvanizes the film in much the same way that Robin Williams elevated Aladdin. Meanwhile, Fiona awaits her rescuer, and naturally enough, Shrek is not what she anticipated. Brimming with delights both visual and verbal (with many wickedly funny jokes at the expense of Walt Disney's legacy), Shrek invites repeated viewings. Not since The Princess Bride has there been a magical, family-friendly, true-love story told with such humor and heart.
New York Times - Elvis Mitchell
The movie itself is a giggly cocktail, though it's more foam than drink, a return to the frothy riffing on pop culture that started back on Bugs Bunny's watch in the Vitaphone days.

I bought this movie last night, it's just a nifty little movie, just dandy, just rad to the bone I suppose. I'd watch it three times!

This was the funniest movie I've seen in a long time. I personally like comedies and this was one of the best!

Though the commercial (non-customer) reviews got a few of the details of the story wrong, they got the jist of it. This is a hilarious movie, for anyone. It will, of course, appeal to children, since, at its core, it is a fairy tale, but it also apeals to pretty much everybody else, unless you're a die-hard Disney fan. The humor is plentiful, with jokes directed at all or certain age groups, and the story is somehow both the oldest story in the book and unique at the same time. Very rarely have fairy tales been looked at in such an interesting light. The massive combined comic talet of Mike Meyers, Eddie Murphy, and John Lithgow virtually gaurentees a hit, but the spot-on writing from Ted Elliot and his colaborators will make, though I should probably say they have already made, a classic. Two thumbs up! Five Starts! Must see! You get it.

i thought that shrek was a wonderful and witty movie.the amimation was the best i have seen in a while... and it was not even a disney movie. this movie i belive apeled to all ages. it was a wonderful cartoon animated movies for the kids and it has a mixup of adult hummor for the parents taking there kids to see it.Shrek pulls from all of the old fairy tales you grew up also has that little fairy tale love twist to it. the movie really grasped my attention and held it all through the movie. but more than anything it made me laugh.this is not a movie that anyone will soon forget. i belive that it will be around for generations. Enjoyable for all ages. you have to see it.

Being an adult I am sometimes wary about watching a movie made for kids. They are often great for kids but silly for adults. Well Shrek may be the most entertaining kids movie any adult will ever watch. From the moment the movie begins, the special effects work stands out. In a matter of moments the film allows us to grow fond of this green slimey ogre called Shrek. One of the reasons is the voiceover work done by Mike Meyers. In fact the casting for all of the voices in this film may be the best of all time. This especially holds true for Eddie Murphy who plays Shrek's sidekick donkey. Murphy practically steals the movie with his terrific work but let's not forget the writing here. Somehow the writers manage to combine what is funny to kids with what is funny to adults. The result is pure magic. There are some hysterical sequences (particularly relating to flatulence) that no red blooded American boy or man can avoid getting a good belly laugh from. The story moves right along with what turns out to be a wonderful ending that teaches a valuable lesson about life but surprises us with a twist on the ''usual'' hollywood ending. This may be what could be described as the perfect movie. Fantastic special effects work, wonderful characters, terrific music, some of the best voiceover work ever done and writing that hits all the right notes.I can't reccomend this movie enough This movie is one that you will watch over and over through the years. Whenever you need a lift or have a bad day at the office put on this movie and smile.

This movie was fabulous!!! Eddie murphy alone is GREAT!! I thought that this was just going to be another stupid kid's movie but I was totally wrong. In fact I watched it over and over and over again. The directors picked a wonderful cast to do the parts of all the characters. It is probably the best animated film to date.

The people who wrote Shrek i want to thank you for putting all of your time and effort into it. It was well worth it if you agree with me. I have never seen a kids movie so funny in my life. I usually think that they are lame when my parents go out and buy a movie. But when they brought Shrek home, I couldn't stop laughing it was so funny. Thanks so much for making that for everyone it was awesome!

I thought Shrek was one of the best films Eddie Murphy did. His humor was funny for kids but hilarious for adults. Many things kids did not pick up upon, adults found to be very funny. Thank you for such a refreshing comedy.
