Sin of Nora Moran / Prison Train

Doubled up for DVD release with The Sin of Nora Moran, Prison Train is a short, effective suspense piece that uses lack of budget as inspiration for a somewhat surreal turn in art design and photography. Overview

Doubled up for DVD release with The Sin of Nora Moran, Prison Train is a short, effective suspense piece that uses lack of budget as inspiration for a somewhat surreal turn in art design and photography. Image Entertainment has provided a transfer from a very clean print -- there are some speckles, blemishes, and tiny scratches, as well as the odd awkward splice and sudden softness, but the look as a whole is very good indeed. The transfer has an aspect ratio of 1.33:1, which is close to the original 1.37:1. The overall monochrome balance is excellent, with very good contrast and deep, detailed blacks that show up particularly well in the last third of the film. The image is sharp for the most part, without signs of edge enhancement, and is relatively free of grain. As the movie is on its own layer, the bit budget is fairly generous, and compression artifacts have been avoided. The sound is in slightly worse shape, with some crackling and a little bit of hum remaining. Enough work has been done, however, to make dialogue intelligible and the mono sound effective overall -- the locomotive and train sound effects are very distinct -- though sound has a slightly muffled quality throughout. Sound levels are very good and stay shy of clipping. There are 12 chapter stops. No extras are provided. Prison Train is a fairly minor thriller from the Gower Gulch end of Hollywood, but this release treats it nicely and is painless to watch.
