Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
If you took The Jazz Singer and re-set it in the 1950's pop-rock world with a fundamentalist Christian background replacing the Jewish culture of the original, the result would be something like Sing, Boy, Sing. The crucial difference between the two films, however, lies in the fact that Al Jolson in the former shared his character's obsessive need to perform: a Jolson denied the opportunity to strut his stuff would quickly fade away into oblivion. In Sing, Tommy Sands is amiable enough and turns in a dramatic performance that is perfectly fine and much better than might be expected. But the actor lacks the inner fire that the part demands and without which the silly, clich├ęd screenplay can't come across as believable. Sands is an attractive performer, and he has a certain presence, but he's not the giant, unquenchable talent that is needed here. The film gets a good deal of help from Edmond O'Brien's tough agent, and Josephine Hutchinson is valuable as the aunt who finally sets Sands on his proper road. And while the story nowadays comes across as simplistic and hard to swallow, the writers do find moments that offer telling insights into the characters. While no Elvis Presley, Sands does well with his musical offerings.
