Goldberg stars as Deloris Van Cartier, a Reno lounge singer who accidentally witnesses a brutal murder carried out by her gangster boyfriend Vince Harvey Keitel. Under the protection of a detective Bill Nunn who's trying to bring down Vince's criminal operation, Deloris is placed in protective custody at a San Francisco convent. Masquerading as a nun renamed Sister Mary Clarence, Deloris shakes up the established order of the sisters' lives, particularly enlivening their choral efforts. Although running constantly afoul of the Mother Superior Maggie Smith, the new, jazzed-up musical act becomes a huge hit in the community, even drawing the attention of the Pope, but also alerting Vince to Deloris' whereabouts. Although credited to the pseudonymous Joseph Howard, Sister Act was actually written by Paul Rudnick and Carrie Fisher. The film was followed by a sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit 1993.

Whoopi Goldberg stars in this high-concept stock comedy, and is occasionally able to inject some life into the proceedings. The premise has her hiding out with a group of nuns when her casino-boss boyfriend (Harvey Keitel) puts out a contract on her because she's witnessed a murder. Before long, she's put some Motown into the nuns' choir, given their confidence a boost, and swelled the numbers of their languishing congregation. Given the star and this kind of broad comedy, Emile Ardolino's direction is surprisingly diffident, his staging flat, and his comic editing and timing non-existent. Goldberg generates most of the film's laughs, but she's ably assisted by three excellent comic actresses in Maggie Smith, as a reluctant Mother Superior, Mary Wickes, and Kathy Najimy. Probably the film's best feature is the rocking choir, which even gets a standing ovation in a command performance for the Pope. The film's surprising success at the box office led to a sequel, Sister Act 2 (1993).

    Hilarious

    A great spoofing on Catholicism without crossing the line into bigotry. One has to be Catholic to truly understand what it means. Whoopi Goldberg makes the nunery come alive (literally, in some places) in this racuous comedy.

    This movie is soo amazingly good

    Whoopi was amazing in this movie, playing as a nun helping a choir go from bad to totally fab. If you like Whoopi in other movies, this is going to be one that you'll fall in love with over and over again.

    great movie

    this has got to be one of my favorite whoopi goldberg movies. she plays sister mary clarence so well! it's a great movie to watch, 'specially if you're really religious and stuff and if you're gung-ho with nuns! lol.

    Woopi has done it again!

    This movie was great, and I think anyone would enjoy it. I saw it @ a sleepover and my friends and I loved it. I can't wait to see Sister Act 2: Back in the habit!

    Sister Act Hits Heaven!!!

    Sister Act is one of my favorite movies. Definently one of Whoopi Goldberg's best movies. Great music with Motown and mostly by Whoopi. Highly recommend!!

    This is the greatest movie on Earth.

    This is great movie. All the Actresses and actors are wonderfull. Exspeacilly Whoopi Golberg and KATHY NAJIMY.This is an uplifting one-of-a-kind aspiring movie. Its about a woman (Deloris Vancartie' who witness a vicous crime and is forced into a convent for her saftey in the end the killer must chose to kill her or not. Kathy is a wonderful person, when I saw this is aspriring movie I thought maby I should look up some infomation on KATHY NAJIMY. I found out she is femanist(Like Me) she cares so much for many people. She is invovled in PETA which is People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, EDIN which is an organization that deals with eating disorders. GLAAD. But I promise she isn't Gay, Gay. Mrs. Najimy is wonderful she believes there is no ''other'' and we should all be treated the same. Also she believes if you don't have your rights I don't have mine. As you can see she has won many awards and given many speeches. But the most important thing you can give is your love, heart, and helping hand in which she has done and will do for the rest of her life. And she taught me that. BLESS HER MAY GOD ALWAYS BE WITH HER.
