Pitching a dramatic series about a funeral home to the various television networks couldn't have been an enviable task. Blessed with the creative backing of Oscar-winning writer Alan Ball, however, Six Feet Under landed on HBO and started garnering acclaim before anyone could come to terms with how morbid and refreshing the concept actually was. The pilot opens with the death of Nathaniel Fisher Sr., owner of the Fisher and Sons Funeral Home, who's killed when a municipal bus broadsides his hearse. The rest of family -- wife Ruth Frances Conroy, sons David and Nate Michael C. Hall and Peter Krause and daughter Claire Lauren Ambrose -- is left to navigate the grief that they've become accustomed to regarding with such detachment. The Fishers are surrounded by a coterie of friends and lovers, many of whom match them, dysfunction for dysfunction. Since the show's launch, Six Feet Under has become a critical darling, landing six Emmys and two Golden Globes and adding yet another jewel to HBO's programming crown. This four-disc set includes all 13 first-season episodes, as well as audio commentaries and deleted scenes narrated by Ball, plus behind-the-scenes interviews with Hall, Ambrose, and Rachel Griffiths -- who is a standout as Nate's girlfriend. If the show's conceit doesn't scare you off, there's much to appreciate enjoy just seems like the wrong word about Six Feet Under.
Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
American Beauty's Oscar-winning screenwriter Alan Ball continues his career-defining exploration of society's misfits and oddballs in this superbly written and brilliantly acted HBO series, the second season of which continues the development of the principals and introduces several vividly drawn supporting characters. Season 2 unfolds -- like its predecessor -- largely within the confines of the Fisher & Sons Funeral Home in Los Angeles. The Fisher matriarch, Ruth Frances Conroy, clings desperately to emotional stability, while her gay son, David Michael C. Hall, grapples with the problems attendant on coming out of the closet. His younger sister, Claire Lauren Ambrose, still unsure of her place in the world, also wrestles with relationship problems. The second season swings its spotlight to prodigal son Nate Peter Krause, the show's nominal leading man, whose old girlfriend Lisa Lili Taylor turns up to further complicate his life. This 13-episode cycle also acquaints the viewer with Ruth's beatnik sister, Sarah Patricia Clarkson, who has her own take on the weirdness that pervades Fisher & Sons. Also serving as executive producer and director, Ball employs his trademark dramatic irony and dark humor in these ferociously funny, and occasionally poignant, explorations of the mysteries of life and death. Yes, death: The Grim Reaper always casts his pall over the show, and corpses abound in all their grisly glory. More often than not, though, Ball and his writers find creative ways to stick it to the man with the scythe -- and their efforts make for some of the most amazing episodes in TV history.
Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
This groundbreaking series, created and largely written by Alan Ball, showed no lessening of quality as Season 3 opened; and the 13 episodes of 2003 brilliantly expanded upon themes and characterizations established in previous years. The first show finds the venerable undertaking firm of Fisher and Sons now renamed Fisher and Diaz, with former "gofer" Rico Freddy Rodriguez asserting himself rather forcefully. Nate Peter Krause and Lisa Lili Taylor try to make a go of their relationship, but his dalliance with Brenda Rachel Griffiths precipitates a split-up that has tragic consequences. Another Fisher scion, David Michael C. Hall, encounters romantic difficulties when outside pressures affect his partnership with Keith. Late in the season, the entire family is shocked when matriarch Ruth Frances Conroy, after a whirlwind courtship, decides to marry George Sibley James Cromwell in a recurring guest-star role. All in all, it's a tumultuous year for the Fishers, whose travails make for uncommonly gripping drama, thanks to Ball and such talented directors as actress Kathy Bates, who shows remarkable talent in her outings behind the camera.
Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The critically acclaimed HBO series created by American Beauty screenwriter Alan Ball becomes more emotionally complex than ever with the 12 episodes of the 2004 season, which begins following the tragic death of Nate's wife, Lisa Lili Taylor. Nate Peter Krause, struggling mightily to cope with his loss and the jarring reality of single parenthood, turns for comfort to old flame Brenda Chenowith Rachel Griffiths, who's trying to get her own life in order. Lisa's family wants her cremated, but Nate wants to bury her in the desert, which takes some finagling to pull off. The second 2004 episode finds Nate quitting the family funeral parlor cold, as the rest of the Fishers try to get accustomed to George Sibley James Cromwell, the new husband of fragile family matriarch Ruth Frances Conroy. But it turns out George has his own mental health issues, including apocalyptic nightmares and invisible friends. Other plot threads running through the season involve the gradual re-acclimation to student life of Claire Lauren Ambrose following her abortion, the relationship issues faced by David Michael C. Hall and Keith Mathew St. Patrick, and the marital problems faced by Federico Freddy Rodriguez after his wife learns he's cheated on her. The year's last episode is a cliff-hanger like none other, involving Nate and Brenda. At a time when most dramatic series are showing their age, Six Feet Under continues to surprise viewers with its cleverly developed story lines and evolving characters.
Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
When Oscar-winning screenwriter Alan Ball created this series for HBO, he determined at the outset that nothing about Six Feet Under -- from its funeral home setting to the unorthodox relationships between its main characters -- would smack of the predictable. That was especially true of the final season, which aired in 2005 and delivered surprise after surprise. There were a few episodes we could call "stiffs," but series television has rarely provided moments such as those found in the 12 installments collected in this box. The season opener, "A Coat of Primer," gets things off to a rocky start when George Sibley James Cromwell returns from the hospital to find wife, Ruth Frances Conroy, emotionally ill prepared to cope with his illness. The Fisher family continues to stumble along, with Nate Peter Krause and Brenda Rachel Griffiths dealing with her troubled pregnancy as best they can. Then, with just three episodes left in the entire series, one of the most jarring and unexpected twists in the history of episodic TV occurs. Ball's determination to avoid the predictable thus results in an audacious downward spiral that sends an already downbeat show into the depths of despair. The final episode, "Everyone's Waiting," ties up all the loose ends -- more or less -- and brings to a satisfying conclusion one of the most remarkable experiments in the medium's history. Whether you were just a casual viewer of Six Feet Under or a devoted fan, this season is the one to get on DVD: it's unforgettable on multiple levels.

    Irrevocably impressing

This is honestly the most amazing tv series I have ever seen. It is my favorite and I really like that the episodes are an hour verses most tv shows that are a mere half hour. I recommend 'Sex Feet Under' to anyone who likes a little bit of everything in a show.

One of the best TV series ever created!

This tv show is graphic and depressing. But if you are like me than you simply can not stop watching. Never before have I felt so involved and connected with a set of tv characters. The final scenes of the final episode are so breathtaking that I watch it on repeat and tears always well up in my eyes. This series is well made with characters that you both love, hate, and love to hate. You relate with them because they are human and make mistakes, and you root for them to come out the other side of their trials as better people. I borrowed these dvds from a friend and loved the set so much I wanted my own because I am sure I will go back to them time and time again.

    Six Feet Under

Thoroughly engaging and entertaining, this series has a way of drawing the viewer in before the conclusion of the first episode. The acting is exceptional, and one can easily relate to situations the characters experience.

The series builds upon itself as the story of the Fisher family unfolds, leaving the audience with a desire to turn the page on a new chapter in this well written story.

    INSPIRATIONAL

If there is one purchasable gift to give in your lifetime, it is this series set to a loved one. The 63 episodes play like a running 50-hour movie. One that really seems too short in the end. In my opinion, the writing and acting set this work apart from most of the TV series ever created. The subject matter and the brutal honesty of the way in which the characters deal with life puts this series at the very top. It is the use of ghosts, real or imagined and the subtle scores (usually the haunting notes of a piano) that cement in my mind that this work stands alone and I can only consider myself a better human being for having experienced it.

    Everything Comes To An End

Six Feet Under is or was probably one of HBO's best series. Right from the very first episode of the series, you're hooked. You fall in love with the characters, you hate them at times. A family based out of a funeral home and their paths will have you coming back for more. A show I never get sick of. Moving, inspiring, humorous, sad, this series has it all.

Like all good shows, this was cancelled as well....

I received this box set for Christmas. It is an outstanding show. You HAVE to watch it. If you can't afford it, please rent it or check it out at your local library (free!). It is definitely something you don't want to miss.

    Great entertainment - never boring...

Thought the title was a bit morbid at the beginning but the actors (all of them) are great and the continuous events and occurrences keep me interested and in suspense. Combines just about every single human event of love and love affairs, jealousy, family life, friendship and also some OK homosexuality ..one quickly learns to love the acting - one learns perhaps some of what goes on in a funeral home when someone dies (not really too morbid) but the stories are truly based on the realities of life here and there. I am not too much into novels but this is a very valuable and entertaining series.
