The tremendously stylized serial ode Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow flies to DVD in this special collector's edition from Paramount Home Entertainment. Presented with a stunning (though cropped) full-screen image and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, the movie has been given a stellar treatment with an enriching picture and engrossing sound that will make you and your home-theater system sweat with joy when you put it in. Those that followed the story of the film will be happy to know that they've included director Kerry Conran's original six-minute short that won him the gig after four years of work putting it together on his home computer. And how is it? Quite incredible, actually. It's basically a shot-for-shot skeleton of the first few minutes of the movie minus dialogue and character interaction. You can see why producer Jon Avnet had such faith in this first-time director, which you can hear the full story behind in Avnet's fantastic audio commentary. While there's a separate commentary from the writer/director Conran and his production designer/brother Kevin (among others in the VFX crew), it's the producer's track that really is the home run here. The filmmaker's commentary is pretty good, though the microphone-shy director is a bit on the dry side and seems more involved with telling the viewer what's real in the shot and what's not. Commentaries aside, there's still plenty more good stuff to be found on this disc, including an incredible two-part documentary on the film that just runs under an hour long. Focusing on the production and the artists who brought this vision to the screen, the behind-the-scenes look is actually quite an inspiring story of underdog success. Also included is "The Art of the World of Tomorrow" featurette, a nine-minute short that chronicles Kevin Conran's involvement in the film and showcases some of his brilliant preproduction art that unfortunately didn't get a gallery of its own for this release. Two deleted scenes await the viewer as well, one of which seems finished while the other gives the viewer an inside look at what the shots in the movie looked like before the graphics and polish were added in. A "gag reel" has also been supplied, as well as a handful of trailers (though none for the actual movie were included). While there will most likely be a more deluxe DVD version coming down the way, this one-disc is a solid release with solid features that really are worth checking out for any fan or casual viewer out there. An anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen edition is also available and recommended for full appreciation of this fun-filled flick.

A delightfully campy mélange of ingredients borrowed from old comic books, cartoons, movie serials, and pulp science fiction novels, Sky Captain reflects in every stylized frame the love its director, Kerry Conran, has for high adventure of the Indiana Jones variety. Rather audaciously, he designed the entire film to be fashioned via computer, using state-of-the-art graphics programs to create sets, props, backgrounds, and even hordes of people. His actors were filmed on nearly bare sound stages, reacting to actions and objects they couldn't see, and their images were inserted into computerized images. The story takes place in the days just before World War II, as a power-hungry mad scientist named Totenkopf archival footage of the late Laurence Olivier uses mechanical monsters and futuristic weapons to lay waste to entire cities. This mass devastation, however, is only a prelude to a more devious plan, which only the intrepid Sky Captain Jude Law and his reporter girlfriend, Polly Perkins Gwyneth Paltrow, can foil. They are assisted by the Captain's trusty assistant, Dex Giovanni Ribisi, and his old flame, aviatrix Francesca "Franky" Cook the scene-stealing Angelina Jolie, wearing a skin-tight leather costume and sporting an eye patch. Conran has executed this unbelievably complex project with nary a flaw; it's practically impossible to detect any seams in this visually sumptuous romp. Film buffs and comic book fans will enjoy cataloguing the innumerable pop culture references sprinkled throughout. For example, one showstopping set piece early in the film replicates, shot for shot, a dazzling sequence from a 1941 Superman cartoon. Aside from the understandable difficulty involved in such an undertaking and they're all chronicled in supplemental features, the cast members seem to be having a great time. And we think you can count on the same.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a grand, lush spectacle that can astound or let down its audience at each wildly creative turn. To its credit, the film is lighthearted and visually sumptuous, packed with the kind of gee-whiz awe that rarely makes it to the big screen. Refreshingly, it does so without one bit of camp or irony in its bones. Hearkening back to the sci-fi pulp of the '40s, the film's look is a living and breathing homage to everything from Max Fleisher's Superman cartoons to Flash Gordon serials. The world that director Kerry Conran and his production designer/brother Kevin meticulously realized is one where the imagination of yesteryear is translated through the help of modern technology into a magical place where big robots and jetpacks reign supreme. Though the groundbreaking painterly effects define Sky Captain's world, it's the characters who populate it that pull the film's canvas together. Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow do an extraordinary job interacting with sets that were never there, but its their stumbling on the lackluster script that results in poor chemistry and cringe-worthy banter. Law himself shows zero machismo as Sky Captain; while his costar excels at playing, well, a feisty version of herself. On the upside, Giovanni Ribisi banks on subtlety with his sidekick character and it works, as does Angelina Jolie, whose tough British sneer chews up the screen charmingly well and makes each and every viewer wish that she owned the screen more than her top-billed thespian costars. Though the flick loses some of its steam after the bravura first act, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow still is an impressive start out of the gate for first-timer Conran, who gets to live out his dream here, viscerally satisfying audiences in a way that even the Hollywood heavyweights have a hard time delivering these days -- it's just too bad that more time wasn't spent on selling the drama rather than the eye-popping effects.

    My boys just loved this movie.

    I thought that this movie was very well done. It's hard to believe that a great deal of this movie was done on a green screen. Most of the background was completed on a computer. Watch the special features really showed the technical side of it. It's worth watching. I believe that it is meant for kids. It's sort of like watching a comic book movie.

    a delightful, very funny'cartoon' film full of allusions to others

    A film directed and made in the old way. Wonderful and welldone. The plots are dense and rich, the acting refers to the forties science-fi or thriller films. The acting is very peculiar: Gynneth Paltrow could be Laureen Bacall in Casablanca...The colors like a mastered old rediscovered film (extraordinary)! The montage is quick, dynamic, the attention constantly focused on a new adventure.Allusions to Indiana Jones, Buck Dany,Superman are numerous. It also made me think of spy-films made in the Forties. I enjoyed the quick and adventureful rhythm of this film. it needs to be appreciated in itself without too much comparisons to others. But finding the allusions is a real game when you see it more than one time. You never bore yourself.

    I appreciate the craftsmanship!

    This poor movie has gotten such a bad rap due to comparisons to other films. I think it needs to be appreciated on it's own merit. The craftsmanship and creativity demonstrated by the director is, I think, very ingenious. Yes, it is designed to look like some of the old black and white films but we can't make those anymore, nor should we expect anything to look like those classics. I think this takes an old format and puts a modern spin on it. And this is just the beginning..the next film like this will improve upon the concept!

    Amazing

    This film showcases some amazing visuals and a lighthearted sense of fun only rivaled by the Indiana Jones and Star Wars series. The acting is solid especially a digitally spliced performance by Sir Laurence Olivier, one that becomes erie when the true nature of his character is revealed. It is fast paced, adrennaline pumping and absolutely 100% entertaining! A must for any sci-fi fan or even a fan of classic cinema (there is a neat scene that uses a scene from the Wizard of Oz as a backdrop and the film's visual style makes it seem like the best sci-fi from the 40's that was never made.)

    A waste of talent and special effects

    This movie promised something it is not: fun. It is quite dull, not even a pale comparision to other adventures films like the Indiana Jones movies. And it is a pity, because both casting and special effects are great. The problem is the script and the pacing, which are uninteresting and superficial. I can not recommend it.

    Scients fiction superb

    This movie is a scients fiction lovers dream movie. A mix of reality and fantasy, comic book flashback. Movies like this is seldom seen on the big screen now a days. After leaving the theater I couldn`t wait to get it in dvd format. This is a must have for all scients fiction fans and lovers.
