Slap Shot

( 10 )

Overview

Way ahead of its time and still bitingly funny, Slap Shot has earned a massive cult following since its initial 1977 release. A very smart mix of harsh no-class humor, crude language, and rich naturalistic drama, this was the first of two DVD releases of Slap Shot. This first one is perfectly acceptable, but doesn't have all the extras that the 25th Anniversary Edition does. What this disc does have in its favor is a clean widescreen anamorphic transfer that showcases Victor J. Kemper's gritty cinematography. ...

Similar to the great camera work that Kemper did on Dog Day Afternoon and The Friends of Eddie Coyle, it's rare for a comedy to have such a downbeat look. Less impressive than the widescreen transfer is the Dolby Digital 2.0 audio track, which sounds fine when played through a television set, but comes off as slightly compressed and muted when fed through a stereo system. Thankfully, both of these transfers would be improved upon for the 25th Anniversary Edition of the movie, but even without any extras, fans of Slap Shot can easily watch this DVD over and over again.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Raw and somewhat controversial in terms of its language and violence, the hockey comedy-drama Slap Shot was a departure for director George Roy Hill, whose previous 1970s output included the period adventures The Great Waldo Pepper (1975) and The Sting (1973). Writer Nancy Dowd carefully balances hilarious rowdiness -- both on and off the ice -- with surprisingly effective emotional tension. Despite the change of pace, Hill revisits some of his favorite pet themes, most notably that of a man becoming painfully aware of the end of an era. To this end, the director re-teams with Paul Newman, who perfectly captures the grizzled, nothing-to-lose attitude of Slap Shot's aging hockey-coach hero. Newman would continue to explore this type of character shading in films such as 1986's The Color of Money.

    Best Sports Movie Ever Made

This is satire of the highest type and as such, it is in my humble opion, the best sports movie ever made. Paul Newnan is at his best and he never for a second comes out of character. The movie is well writen, well acted, and well directed. if you are a true sports fan you will love it from start to finish.

    Best Sports Movie. Period.

This is by far the best sports movie of all time. The movie is hysterical and I never get sick of watching it. The true stars of the movie are the Hanson Brothers. They steal every scene they're in. A must see for all sports fans.

    Take it from a skater...

I've been skating (figure skating, with toepicks, not CCM's), and this is by far the funniest and most honest portrait of hockey in the 70's. It's part time capsule, part entertainment, part sport, with a bit of mockery thrown in. Watch this more than 3 times, I swear you'll be quoting lines with ease. Nothing beats Reggie Dunlop putting a bounty on Tim McCracken's head. You'll laugh till you cry. A must see!

    Best movie ever filmed!!!

By far my favorite movie of all. I'm sure I've seen it close to 50 times. I've NEVER heard of anyone who didn't like it. A ''must see'' for anyone who has a sense of humor.

    A Must For Hockey Fans!

This movie is a classic. I own this movie and never get sick of watching it. I always get a kick out of the ending (I won't ruin it for you) and I would suggest it for any hockey fan, even for those of you who don't especially like hockey. It combines all the elements of a great movie, fighting, humor, cheese, mooning and hockey!...of course, that last one is a little biased. I have never known anyone to not like Slap Shot, and I have shared it with numerous people!
