Overview

A surprisingly accurate and tender coming-of-age picture centered on a 1980s subculture, SLC Punk receives an excellent DVD release from Sony Pictures Classics. A real cult favorite that has found an audience on cable and video since its 1999 theatrical release, the disc features a pristine widescreen anamorphic transfer of SLC Punk and its better-than-average rock soundtrack on a separate audio track. This is a great option, even if you have to play the movie at the same time (the dialogue track gets muted out). Writer/director James Merendino drew on his own experiences growing up in Utah for SLC Punk (SLC stands for Salt Lake City) and he's joined by star Matthew Lillard in a very entertaining audio commentary track that offers insights into making the movie along with very funny insider anecdotes about the cast and crew. Merendino went on to adapt his own movie into a comic book and this edition of the DVD also provides a digital housing of the first issue of that stark, black-and-white comic, which is edgier and less humanistic than the film.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Richard Gilliam
One of the better entries in the '80s-as-nostalgia genre, SLC Punk is more structured, and thus more conventional, than many of its alternative-lifestyle predecessors. The film's strong points are Matthew Lillard's fine lead performance as Steveo and the convincing sense of time and place evoked by writer/director James Merendino. What doesn't work is the predictability of the plot. Fans of Trainspotting, in particular, will be able to guess at least two of the surprises as the story develops. Nor does the film begin to reach the punk heights of Sid and Nancy, though it does cleverly use references to the Sex Pistols as comedic fodder. Perhaps because it's so comparatively structured for the subject matter it covers, SLC Punk has a surprising lack of stylistic flair. On the other hand, the film benefits from underplaying the contrast between the punk lifestyle and the Mormon-dominated culture of Salt Lake City, UT. Overall this is a good film, with interesting characters and strong use of location, but it doesn't quite climb to classic status.

Upon seeing this film a second time, I was struck by its brilliant humor, original cinematography, and unparalleled acting. Truly an independent film classic. Worthy of ownership, I'd venture say.

I just saw this movie and I absolutely loved it. I thought it was fun to watch, yet it had a real story with an actual point. Personally, I found that I could relate and had a feeling of understanding. I would deffinately recommend seeing this movie.

this movie was great! you can never watch it too many times. it had a good point to it and has a valuable meaning. it discusses the real issues that ''real punks'' face and think about. and has a good twist to it at the end.

It was funny, realistic to an extent, and it had some pretty hott guys in it. What else do you want in a movie?!.

SLC Punk is an awesome movie that shows how punks actually think. It shows we aren't just braindead people that just say stuff about the government cause have nothing else to say. The clothes worn in it very well thought out, and not poseur at all and the actors did a great job of playing real, hardcore punkers.

SLC Punk is down to earth, real, and while it entertains you with it's humor, it keeps you in check with the dramatics. A good ending, puts everything in perspective and makes for a fantastic show that everyone should see at least once, if not more.

This movie is incredible. The powerful storyline is one to strike a few chords with anyone who has lived or is living a ''punk'' life. My friends and I watch this movie religiously. You laugh, you cry, it brings people together. What more could you ask of a movie?

Steve-o incredibly hot through out the whole movie might i say.. is not only a hard core punk but has a soft side for his friend heroin bob ( who doesn't do heroin..) this describes the softer side of all us anarchist punks out there ''destroying government property with a kind hearted smile'' :0) This is life in the SLC one of the biggest freakin Mormon towns in the freakin world. Someone has to be different. Slipknot fans and Brittany spear er's stay away this is too much punk for one little poser.

''Poseurs are people that look like punks, but they did it for fashion. And they were fools, they'd say, ''Anarchy in the UK''. See? Poseurs. What good is that to those of us in Utah, America? You don't live your life by lyrics.'' (just a little sumthing to think about when watching the best movie ever!!) SLC PUNK is the all time, most kick A$$ movie!!!!!!!!!!!! if you have not seen it yet, whut the H**L are you wating for!!

my favorite part was the speech on the 'anarchy in the UK' posers. That must have been, like, written out of my head. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and rate it w/ 5 stars

I love this movie. It has a great sense of indiviguality and personal growth throughout the movie. Buy it and watch it at least once a month to keep a true sense of what a poser is like.

You all really need to get this movie. It is the best movie I have ever seen! YEAH PUNK ROCK!!!!

slc punk is ''THE BEST MOVIE IN THE WORLD!'' nothing else can compare. The very hot down to earth characters are like a male version of me and my best friend. with their anarchist speeches and their logical opinions stevo and bob are by far the best characters. this movie is the only REAL punk movie but it is also the BEST movie so if you don't like it you're a douche.

Although i have to disagree with those who say that this movie is the ''perfect punk movie,'' it was what i consider an amazing movie. The characters are great, the plot is different, and the outcome of the movie hits home for many, including myself. I am no ''punk'' in any sense of the word, but this movie is not really about that. It presents a view on life and the story of how that view changes/grows as the main character goes through life. A good movie to leave you thinking when you are done watching it, and def. a movie to see more than once. Good stuff...

this movie is excellent. even if you're not into punk, you'll fall in love with the whole idea of what being punk is all about, especially considering the movie is based in a place as consevative as UTah. Heroin Bob is one of the coolest characters in any movie anywhere.

alright heres the deal, this movie was great, very interesting plot, very well developed characters, and strong acting preformances from actors who arent considered ''a-list.'' the only flaw is that it can get confusing with all the parallel editing. most of all this movie isnt about anarchy or punk rock its about life.

I must say, I was hesitant to move to Utah back in March of 2000. Heard lots of warnings, 'you will never get a job looking like that; they won't listen to you; you'll be treated like an outsider, no way you'll make it'. I must say, I have had the BEST time of my life living here. I have met the best friends, found the scene, always have a show to go to. People are always gonna stare at something that they aren't used to. SLC Punks shows the viewer,, give up your individual likes/dislikes, and cave in to Mr. Biz. Well, If you feel that you have to go that route, go for it. I arrived in Utah in 2000 with my thoughts, pink and green hair, and became the most valued Security Agent in Utah. I left that job for moral issues, and now am a manager of one of the largest Beauty Supply Companies in the US. All with my piercings, tatts, and attitude. Guess that some Utahn's are ok with it, just gotta show them that we can do it.

What can I say about this movie that hasn't already been said by all the other reviews except that this movie 'gave me hope.' I am a 'different looking' person, in fact my friends all told me that I look just like Herion Bob. Nice thing to say. So I am treated here in my hometown like I am up to no good all the time. Plus my beloved dog just died and I'm very low. I was in the store and asked the universe to point out something for me to watch that would lift my spirits. I opened my eyes and was looking right at 'SLC Punk.' So I bought it and went home, alone and watched it. I laughed, cried, thought about life and then some all within it's beautiful journey. It made me feel not so alone because the story was being told by people who look/act like me and yet it's a story about EVERYBODY. See this movie. Share this movie. Let it give you 'hope' as well. Plus check out the Soundtrack, one of the bests!!
