The Season Two DVD looks like it's going to be great! Four disks with the entire second season, plus TONS of extra goodies? Wooohooo! SLEDGE HAMMER was the most outrageous parody sitcom show of all time! It's absolutely side-splitting. It ranks right up there with Family Guy, Married With Children, Get Smart and the Simpsons on a short list of my favorite shows of all time. My favorite episodes of Season II are 'Play it Again Sledge' where Sledge leaves the force and tries his hand as a private investigator (I'll let you take a wild guess how that turns out!?) and 'Model Dearest' where we are graced with many lovely 80's beauties and many big guns all in one episode (what more can a man ask for!?). Season II even has Sledge Hammer doing Max Headroom!!!! I VERY HIGHLY SUGGEST you get this DVD!!!
Sledge Hammer! was a great parody of Dirty Harry that ran for two seasons during 1986-1988. It was a brilliantly funny comedy show that was way ahead of its time. Several factors came together to make this a truly outstanding series. First of all was the comic genius of producer Alan Spencer. He wrote several of the scripts, and ensured that the writers consistently delivered rapid-fire, witty jokes. One hallmark of Sledge Hammer! was that just about every show contained several memorable quotes. This comedy series was intelligent. Another key factor in the success of the show was the comic talents of David Rasche, who brilliantly portrayed Sledge Hammer as a bumbling Dirty Harry. Immensely likable, he deftly shot out one-liners with great comic timing. More importantly, he made Sledge Hammer a real person that the viewer cared about. Anne-Marie Martin was Detective Dori Doreau, Sledge's beautiful and smart partner. An excellent comic actress, Anne-Marie's good-hearted Dori played straight-man to Sledge's buffoon. She helped anchor the show because she was a good person, and the fact that she liked Sledge helped the audience realize that although Sledge was a little crazy, he was good-hearted. Harrison Page was Captain Trunk, the long-suffering boss. His roll was similar to that of the Chief in Get Smart! and Harrison Page was a master of the slow burn. Season Two had many great episodes such as Icebreaker, Hammeroid, It Happened What Night? and Death of a Few Salesmen. But that best of them all was the poignant last episode, Here's to You, Mrs. Hammer, where Sledge asked Dori to marry him. Many fans of the show have wondered for years whether Sledge and Dori would have gotten married had there been a Season Three, and Alan Spencer addresses this question on the audio commentary for that episode. In addition to 19 highly entertaining episodes, this Season Two set is filled with marvelous extras. All of the four audio commentaries are first-rate, and the Icebreaker audio commentary is especially pleasing since Anne-Marie Martin joins Alan Spencer in a hilarious dialogue. The documentary Gun Crazy was excellent, especially the sections on Hammeroid and Desperately Seeking Dori. There is a moving tribute to Bill Bixby called Our Favorite Director which demonstrates just how key he was to Season Two's great success. There is a delightful Trivia Quiz and a "Top Ten Questions" section which is informative, particularly on the prospects for a new Sledge Hammer! movie. Sledge Hammer! Season Two is absolutely outstanding and I give it my highest recommendation.
