Overview

In this version, Ichabod Johnny Depp is a New York City detective whose unorthodox techniques and penchant for gadgets make him unpopular with is colleagues. He is sent to the remote town of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of bizarre murders, in which a number of people have been found dead in the woods, with their heads cut off. Local legend has it that a Hessian ghost rides through the woods on horseback, lopping off the heads of the unsuspecting and unbelieving. Ichabod refuses to believe in this legend, convinced that there must be a logical explanation for the murders. In time, Ichabod becomes smitten with a local lass, Katrina Van Tassel Christina Ricci, who is the sweetheart of the burly Brom Bones Casper Van Dien, and he becomes determined to capture the murderer to prove his bravery and win her heart. Christopher Walken, Jeffrey Jones, and Christopher Lee highlight the supporting cast; Lee's appearance is particularly apt, since Burton has cited the Hammer films of the 1960s as a major influence in making this film. Andrew Kevin Walker and Tom Stoppard contributed to the screenplay.

The latest masterwork to spring from the fertile and twisted imagination of Tim Burton turns Washington Irving's quaint tale of Upstate New York peculiarities into a grisly, nightmarish detective story. Johnny Depp an actor born to wear period garb is as grave and handsome as a young Buster Keaton in the role of Ichabod Crane, a fastidious New York City constable assigned to investigate a decapitation in the rustic hamlet of Sleepy Hollow. His inquiries are stymied by the natives' superstitious belief in the Headless Horseman, a demonic assassin whose future victims might include fair maiden Christina Ricci looking especially attractive with long blonde hair and daring décolletage. But it's the Horseman himself -- played by Christopher Walken -- who steals the show with his gory escapades, which are captured with startling realism thanks to computer-enhanced imaging. Burton's adaptation plays fast and loose with Irving's story, sliding at times into a cartoonishness that detracts from the film. But his stylized depiction of the gloomy, fog-shrouded village is stunningly beautiful, evoking an atmosphere of the dread that hangs over the scene, palpable as the chilly mist.

Often cited as an homage to the infamous films of Hammer Studios, upon deeper investigation into the influences of director Tim Burton, it becomes increasingly clear that, while the film does indeed have much in common with the British horror classics, the majority of visual influence is instead derived from the lush, gothic films of Mario Bava. Bearing a striking resemblance to 1960s Black Sunday in particular, Burton's muted color palate, vividly splashed with abundant amounts of blood so unnaturally red it seems to drip from the screen, represents a masterful command of color scheme rarely seen since Bava's color-era heyday. While Sleepy Hollow may not retain the masterful balance of a striking visuals and solid characterization as skillfully as Burton's early efforts, Sleepy Hollow remains a remarkably beautiful film which offers both dark humor and some breathtaking set pieces. Burton's cast does as much as humanly possible to bring scribe Andrew Kevin Walker's characters to life, though without the proper foundation, the means to define the characters much further beyond the occasional meaningful gesture or enduring quirk are unfortunately absent. Despite this minor flaw, those willing to judge Sleepy Hollow on its own terms and forego the stratospheric expectations with which Burton films are generally greeted will find themselves in for a sumptuously visual and giddily macabre interpretation of an enduring tale that has chilled the bones of children for generations.

    Burton is just plain...GENIUS...as usual.

    Two words: Tim Burton. That honestly should be enough for you. If you like dark, tragic, scary, love stories...this is right up your allow.

    Give it a shot. It's just a plain gory fun.

    One of my favorite films of all time

    Yes, I have read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow many, many times. It is one of the classics and I love Washington Irving's writing. But I think you can love the book and also love the movie and I do love this movie. Johnny Depp is in his element working with Tim Burton and his portrayal of Ichabod Crane is amazing. Why this man does not have an Oscar yet is beyond me. While he doesn't exactly fit Irving's description, his Icahbod Crane is multi-faceted and carefully developed. I thought he did an excellent job. The entire cast was wonderful, especially Miranda Richardson, Christina Ricci, and Michael Gambon. The set, costumes, and score are beautiful. They cast the perfect atmosphere of spookiness and melancholy. The plot has little to do with the book, but nevertheless, it is riveting. I recommend this one!

    Was better Than I Thought

    Of course it was better than i Thought But It Wasn't As Gory As I Thought It Could Of been R for like Strong Violence and A scene of sexuality or PG-13 for Like Horror Violence And Sexual Content. great Great best Movie I've Ever Seen Just Not The Goriest.

    Beyond Dead good

    This was a great movie. Even after seeing it a hundred times it still makes you jump. This movie will keep you on your toes and sreaming for more!! Cranes' personaltiy kept the movie slightly humerous while staying creepy.

    Fun and surprising

    Loved it, and was surprised how much! Johnny Depp's spot-on portrayal of the quirky and cowardly Ichabod is a refreshing spin on a well-known character and adds humor to an otherwise creepy tale. The setting and feel of the movie is classic Tim Burton. Absolutely fascinating to watch.

    Awesome. Awesome to the max.

    This movie was one of the best halloween movies i have ever seen. The story was great, acting was great, the headless horseman was cool, awsome movie. (chelsea, a thousand curses upon you for dissing this movie)

    Use your head- see it!

    'Sleepy Hollow' is a very good movie. It is exciting, sort of scary, and the performances given by the actors are very entertaining and believable. Johnny Depp as Ichabod Crane is a hero who doesn't want to believe... but has to. For those who like Johnny Depp and his excellent work as an actor, I recommend this film, for he gives another great performance. And even if you aren't a fan of Johnny Depp, it's still a good horror movie, even if it really isn't all that scary... that is, if you can take blood and... mwah ha ha... hessians from the grave.

    not the best johnny depp movie, but it's still great

    johnny depp (as always)did a five star performence as Ichobod Crane, wich it was entertaining to see him play a man who is afraid of his own shadow. Tim burton's directing was also five star, and it was the best tim burton- johnny depp como.

    Great!

    I really loved this movie. I don't see why it was rated R though. There is some blood and gore but I've seen worse in PG-13 movies. The actors had very good performances.

    Sleepy Hollow

    Sleepy Hollow was a really bad movie. the special effects weren't realistic and it was extremely gory. It didn't hold my attention and it just basically stunk!

    Sleepy Hollow

    what a great movie, I saw this movie and dropped because it was just so good. Although after i saw From Hell it reminded me so much of this movie. But even still this movie kicked so much @#%!!!!!!

    Not for the Weak- Hearted!!!

    Sleepy Hollow is another one of the many movies based on a fantastic book. This movie is not for the weak-hearted though, there is a lot of heads rolling and blood and gore. Also the only reason I gave this 4 stars id because the movie has nothin 2 do with the book except the title.

    Awesome Movie !! ^_^

    I thought this movie was absolutely wonderful! in it were awesome actors (Johnny Depp ^_^), good story line (i mean, who wouldn't love a plot that contained a headless horseman chopping of people's head?!), and of course...JOHNNY DEPP!!!!!! I think he made a wonderful Ichabod Crane; and it was funny how he always fainted and was scared of that spider... I thought the music (by Danny Elfman) was also nifty. It suited the movi very well. Buy this movie, and while your at it, buy Pirates of the Caribbean!!!! (Johnny Depp is in my oppinion even better in that, as Jack Sparrow!)

    Nothing To Do With The Original Story-Terrible!

    I like Tim Burton's films, for the most part, and he is one of the most imaginative and original moviemakers out there. But this movie is a travesty, simply because he stole the characters from my all-time favorite story ''The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow'' and made them participants in what amounts to a slasher film. That, to me, is just plain wrong. Unfortunately, many people who see this movie will be under the impression that its the same as Washington Irving's classic tale, which it isn't. They'll expect to read a story filled with gloomy, horror movie imagery, only to be ''disappointed'' that its just a good-natured, old-fashioned ghost story. If Tim Burton wanted to make a horror movie, then he should've come up with something original (which he has always done in the past) instead of stealing characters. He also could've made a wonderful film version of the actual story, but he didn't. That is why I didn't like this film at all.

    Ay-Ya!Johnny!

    Oy!I liked it alot,especially Johnny Depp,for awhile I forgot it was even Depp!He dose such a good job becoming the charactors,like in Pirates of the Carribian and Edward Scissorhands,you can hardly tell it's him beneath the gastly scissorhands,deep tan and black eye-liner,to which,I have to say he wears more than I do, in Pirates of the Carribian,and I've never seen such tan skin! In Sleepy Hallow you see the best of him once more,the gastly pale skin and black clothes...almost looks black-and-white like The Pianist director Roman Polenski did. Although the gore dosn't tickle my fancey,Johnny Depp did! Ugh!And he is always fainting!Perfect!I'd think Ichabod Crane would,too.
