A midseason replacement that premiered on Fox in March 1995, Sliders starred Jerry O'Connell as Quinn Mallory, a brilliant graduate student who creates a device that allows him to "slide" among various parallel Earth-like universes. To test his invention, he invites co-worker Wade Welles (Sabrina Lloyd) and his physics professor, Dr. Max Arturo (John Rhys-Davies), to his basement lab in San Francisco. Unfortunately, Quinn uses too much power, and the resulting vortex sucks the trio in, along with Rembrandt Lee Brown (Cleavant Derricks), who happened to be driving by the house at the fateful moment. Throughout the rest of the series the group makes its way from one alternate reality to the next, and Season 3 takes them to a world consumed by mysterious fires ("The Fire Within"); another filled with dragons and wizards ("Dragonslide"); and one bizarrely populated by zombie-like creatures ("Sole Survivors"). Standout episodes in this 1996-97 collection include: "Rules of the Game," in which Arturo is seriously injured during a game that features a human hunt; "The Guardian," in which Quinn slides to 1980 San Francisco and comes face to face with his younger self; and the "Exodus," featuring the Who's Roger Daltrey as an amoral colonel fleeing a dying Earth. This two-parter, which aired during the February sweeps, not only featured the stunt casting of Daltrey but also the extreme departure of Rhys-Davies from the series.
