Overview

"To be or not to be, that is the question, eh?" A hit on the Sundance Channel, this quirky Canadian series follows the fortunes of a dysfunctional Shakespearean theater troupe, exposing the high drama and scorching battles that happen behind the scenes. Paul Gross stars as Geoffrey Tennant, the passionate but unstable artistic director of the New Burbage Theatre Festival. Haunted by the ghost of his predecessor (Stephen Quimette), he struggles to realize his creative vision while handling touchy actors, a jittery general manager (Mark McKinney), a pretentious guest director (Don McKellar), and his own tempestuous romance with the festival's leading lady (Martha Burns). The backstage bedlam mirrors the onstage angst as Geoffrey directs three of Shakespeare's masterpieces -- Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear -- one in each season. Guest stars include Rachel McAdams, Colm Feore, Sarah Polley, and renowned Stratford Festival actor William Hutt in one of his last performances. The seven-disc set includes all 18 episodes plus an all-new bonus disc with a featurette, cast and crew interviews, and on-set footage.

This series had me hooked from the first moment with some of the smartest writing and finest acting ever to grace the tube. It is funny, poignant, and highly original. It weaves everyday life, love, theater, and even Shakespeare into the stuff of magic.

This Canadian series which covers the trials and tribulations, as well as the joys and sorrows of a Shakespeare Festival is totally engaging in every way. Modeled on the Stratford, Ontario Festival, this company is called The New Burbage festival, taking its name from one of the great actors of Shakespeare's time. The series covers 3 seasons, each with many scenes from plays being presented that season, as well as a major dramatic Shakespeare play for that season 1)Hamlet, 2)Macbeth, and 3) King Lear. Those 3 plays also bear relevance to the offstage plotline of that season. The actors are uniformly wonderful, and after 14 hours of time spent with them, I would have liked even more.

Don't take anybodies word for how excellent this series is. Watch it and become an instant fan! I don't know if real festivals have these kind of  interesting situations (including a ghost) but I hope so.

Slings and Arrows has to be one of the funniest shows out there. It has humour related to not only Shakespeare, but the drama of theater groups, and little bits on real life that make it a fantastic, funnily-written show.

Slings and Arrows is incredible. I only wish I'd known about it sooner, and there had been more episodes. I have been completely delighted with this purchase.
