Ray's burglary is a failure, but Frenchy's cookies are a rousing success, and within a year the store has spawned a nationwide franchise that makes the Winklers rich. However, while Ray wants to move to Miami and bask in the sun, nouveau riche Frenchy now aspires to join high society, with posh art dealer David Hugh Grant as her guide. Written and directed by Allen and shot in New York City, Small Time Crooks features one of Allen's trademark strong supporting casts, including Michael Rapaport, Elaine Stritch, Jon Lovitz, and Elaine May.

Small Time Crooks = Big Time Laughs!

When you here the name Woody Allen, most people think back to his classic and hilarious film from the 70's. Bananas, Sleeper, Love and Death, Take the Money and Run, and Annie Hall. My favorite of his more recent films is The Manhattan Murder Mystery. But the film that goes back to his classics is Small Time Crooks. Woody Allen and Tracey Ullman are the best comedy pair since Woody and Diane Keaton. It also has a hilarious scene with Woody and Elaine May which Woody refers to as ''dumb like a.. horse or a dog or something.'' It goes back to the bank robbing problems of Take the Money and Run to a whole new breed of comedy... Cookie Business. An incredibly funny scene of a TV tour of ''Sunset Cookies'' full of Woody Allen's one-liners: ''The cookies have a really fresh smell, and that's all put on with a chemical spray.'' and from a fellow crook (Jon Lovitz)who put two kids through college from burning buildings down for insurance. ''The first thing I did was make sure the building was fire safe.'' And the funniest ending with May and Woody's big heist. Small Time Crooks has tied for 1st with Love and Death for Woody Allen's funniest yet.

    A wonderful.......entertaining film from a brilliant man!

Woody Allen's comedies are something special. first of all they are not like the averge comedy that is put out into theatres every month......they have something great about them......not just his comedies.....all his films.... they are realistic......... they are always insightful satires...... the caracters are interresting and we care for them....... Small Time Crooks is about Ray and Frenchie a married couple who decide to rob a bank. Ray is down stairs of a store digging a tunel while Frenchie is upstairs selling cookies........the twist? the cookies are a hit! and that's just the first 40 minutes of the film...there's a whole entire other story that follows that. Woody Allen doesn't do this much, but in this film at a certain part.....it fades to black......and (ONE YEAR LATER) appears on screen.....that's when the second story starts.....and it's just as good as the introduction.......even better! GIVE TRACEY ULLMAN AN ACADEMY AWARD please!!!!!! she plays Frenchie, and you guessed it....Woody plays Ray.
