Overview

The ever-growing fan base for WB's teen-Superman saga can relive the best moments of their show's first season with this handsomely presented box set. Comprising all 21 episodes, Smallville: The Complete First Season offers a crisp transfer of every segment, each presented as it was originally aired, in letterboxed format with Dolby stereo sound. Beyond that, commentary and deleted scenes are provided for two episodes: the pilot, which has comments from director David Nutter as well as the show's executive producers, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar; and "Metamorphosis, which is analyzed by Nutter and Gough. Rounding out the disc are a complement of promotional ads, an "interactive" look at the town of Smallville, a DVD-ROM link for online bonus access, and a storyboard-to-screen analysis of the pilot episode.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Cree McCree
A smash hit for the WB, this fresh spin on the Superman franchise asks the burning question: What was Clark Kent like in high school? As played by Tom Welling, the Teen of Steel is all too human; he may be hunkier than Dawson, but he's equally insecure. It's not easy being different in a small town -- especially if you're cursed with superpowers you don't really understand and you hanker for a gal whose folks were killed by the meteor shower that brought you to Earth. While pursuing the luscious Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk), young Clark must dodge Kryptonite rocks, sadistic jocks, and pesky mutants like "bugboy" -- not to mention his own X-ray vision, which gives him blinding headaches. Although neatly constructed, Smallville's first season is not immune to the monster-of-the-week syndrome. But like Buffy and The X-Files before it, the show lays the groundwork for story arcs destined to haunt future seasons. Particularly compelling is Clark's relationship with Lex Luther (Michael Rosenbaum), son of the town tycoon, whose life he saves in the opening episode. As every fan knows, young Lex will grow up to be the archest of Superman villains. But in Smallville, his fate is by no means sealed. Luther's struggle to escape the grip of his evil father and salvage his own humanity is a superheroic battle in itself.

Smallville brings a side of Superman revealed as a young man, going through the average teenage dramas, but with the weight of many people's lives on his shoulders. Each episode is connected in a way to each other, but with a new chilling plot. A definite keeper!

This is my favorite drama series that is concurrently on TV. Smallville is about Clark Kent learning about himself during his teenage years. He has deal with his new powers, villains, love interest (Lana Lang) and future nemesis Lex Luthor. The first season was truly a classic. Any Superman or comic fan would love this DVD package.

Smallville's first season is ful of action, excitment, and emotions. Following Clark Kents journey in high school, the TV show is amazing with its symbolism and irony. This set is truly a worthy purchase!!!

This is one of the most well-constructed super-hero shows I've ever seen. Tom Welling portrays Clark Kent just as good as Christopher Reeve did in ''Superman: The Movie.'' Every episode is well-thought out with each villian being effected by Kryptonite meteor rocks. Lex Luthor's portrayal by Michael Rosenbaum is brilliant. His relationship with his father, Lionel Luthor, is a great mix to the show. Clark's foster parents Jonathan and Martha Kent are written perfectly. Basically, this is a must-see for any fan of Superman in general. Also, I really dig the original Superman score whenever Superman-like happens in the series.

As a longtime comic reader and fan of the DC archives, I can truly say this is one of, if not THE, best adaptation of Superman as a teen. One of the best titles I had ever read and enjoyed in my youth was ''The New Adventures of Superboy.'' This show has not only captured the essence of that title, but put some new spin into it. Seeing Clark (Tom Welling) learn about his powers and developing the sense to control them while dealing with all the issues of being a teenager are more than enough to drag me in front of the television week after week. It's the first show in years that has kept me as enthused! You can't go wrong with this one!

Having never been a Superman fan, I wasn't expecting much when I first watched ''Smallville'' on the WB. My mind was quickly changed. This is by far the most fun-to-watch show I've ever seen. Clark coping with his newly-found powers, not to mention the unattainable girl of his dreams. Lex's epic struggle with his father, which we can all relate to on some level. On a scale of 1-10, I give the Smallville: Season One DVD an 11! Buy it now...seriously, stop reading.

I STARTED WATCHING SMALLVILLE NEAR THE END OF SEASON ONE. AT FIRST WHEN WHEN IT PREMIRED IN OCTOBER OF 2001, I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS GOING TO LAST AND OF COURSE I WAS WRONG. I THINK SEASON ONE WAS GREAT, I CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON TWO TO COME OUT. THERE ARE LOT OF PEOPLE THAT I KNOW THAT LOVE SMALLVILLE

Ah, Smallville...how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... Smallville is a superb update origin story of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's iconic Superman comic book superhero, and with great writing, acting, and special effects, manages to be better than any incarnation of the Man of Steel that came before it (even the comic). I do love Smallville, yes, but this first season did have a problem: Formulaic episodes. Most of the episodes consisted of ''Hey, those meteor rocks turned this guy into a monster, let's go beat him up!'', and it took me a while to actually like the show. But when I did...I loved it, and eventually became fanatical about it. Season 2 is even better! I can't wait for it to come out! (By the way, as I write this, it's about 35 minutes until the premiere of season 3!)

What happened to Jesus between the age of 12 and 30? Well, Smallville is WONDERFUL it its attempt to unveil the Clark Kent mystery that's similar to the mystery of Jesus' youth and young adult years. I watched Superman and wondered what happened during all his growing years. I wonder no more and only wait in anticipation and excitement as Smallville reveals itself like hidden treasure. A must buy !

If the 2nd season comes out as nice as this one we will be in for a real treat. From the minute I put it in my player and heard Remy Zero singing 'Save Me' right to the closing credits of the season finale I was glued to this incredible first season. Clark, Lex, Lana, Chloe, Lionel, Pete, Jonathan and Martha.....could it get any better? The WB hit a grand slam with this one.
