Overview

Encompassing 12 music videos from the British post-punk favorites, The Smiths: The Complete Picture DVD is a highly entertaining, technically superior slice of '80s nostalgia. The songs sound as good as they did on the original albums; turning on the closed captioning makes it nearly impossible not to sing along. The video quality is also quite good, despite the low-budget and/or TV origins of the source material. Colors are bold and attractive; Morrissey and Marr look as stylish on DVD as they did when the videos were first released. Selecting Feature Start from the main menu plays every chapter in succession. Instant access to each video is also available from the main/branching menu via song title and still frame. The final chapter/video is actually a short film by avant-garde director Derek Jarman, made up of abstract imagery set to the band's "The Queen Is Dead," "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out," and "Panic." It's a bit unfortunate that the DVD edition doesn't add anything new over the previous VHS release; some fans will be disappointed that the Top of the Pops version of "Sheila Take a Bow" is included over the excellent promotional-video rendition. The chief bonus of the DVD edition is that the sound is more dynamic, making it a worthwhile purchase for those who already own the title on VHS. Short but sweet, The Smiths: The Complete Picture might not really be complete, but it's still essential for fans.
