Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Inspired by Gary Paulson's award-winning book, Waterdance, Brian Levant's PG-rated Snow Dogs is a delightful surprise -- especially to anyone who expects little beyond a 90-minute exercise in animatronics. Part Northern Exposure, part Beethoven, and thoroughly heartwarming, Snow Dogs serves up Academy Award winner Cuba Gooding Jr. (Jerry Maguire) as Ted Brooks, a Miami dentist who gets a new leash on life when he learns that he was adopted and has inherited a champion sled-dog team from Tolketna, Alaska. The "dumb city slicker" gradually finds himself at home in this community of eccentrics and decides to enter his dog team in the Arctic Challenge, a grueling 400-mile race. Refreshingly, Snow Dogs is not concerned with who wins the big race. At heart, it is about Brooks's quest to learn the truth about his parentage, which leads him to local legend Thunder Jack. Portrayed by Oscar winner James Coburn at his flintiest, Jack earned his name, a resident memorably whispers to Brooks, because "he's been hit by thunder...twice." Gooding and Coburn make a great team, and kids will love the dogs, especially the aptly named Demon, in whom Levant has found another charismatic canine star. Snow Dogs figures to become a often-played staple among canine-inclined families.
All Movie Guide
No review of Snow Dogs would be complete without a couple obligatory words bemoaning how far Cuba Gooding Jr. has fallen since Jerry Maguire. It's possible Gooding never wanted to uphold the reputation of Oscar winner, and accepted being on a downward slide since that career pinnacle. But it's doubtful he imagined himself scrambling through the Alaskan wilderness, over-emoting like a buffoon, eyes and mouth fighting to see which could open the widest. Such slouching toward stereotypes is a disturbing trend in Disney movies, though the premise itself might be more directly responsible for turning the film into a walking punch line. To be sure, Gooding gives it his all, but Snow Dogs may have needed less than that to work. For the youngest children, just giving the dogs facial expressions might be enough. But older ones will probably find it square at best. Since this is Disney, the movie is assembled with a certain tidy competence and at least a minimum of good cheer; another Disney byproduct is that it deals with an orphan type seeking out his long-lost parentage, part of an ongoing thematic preoccupation. And sure, it's nice to empower Alaska as a demographic, as well as the tragically ignored sport of dog sledding. But unless you're a Star Trek fan peeking in to see Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) as Gooding's mother, mush onward.

    Kids and parents fun.

We watched it together as a family including my 4 years old and we all laugh a lot. She loves the movie and wanted to see it again. Kids may pick up on different things than adults, but had a great time too. Characters were well defined for a comedy, and story moved fast enough to keep you interested. I would recommend it for anyone who wants an easy movie with lots of jokes. Definitely good for a family to watch together.

    Heartwarming film....

I love Snow Dogs, but it wasn't until after I saw it for the 2nd time that it really grew on me. The first time I saw it, I was a little disturbed by that scene when Thunder Jack knocked Ted out to the ground after referring to Ted as &quot ancient history&quot as his own son. But, as I watched the film more and more, I realize that it was all a part of slapstick comedy, and Thunder Jack's intimidating personality, I suppose...just that this particular scene was a bit too much. The fact that Thunder Jack and Ted rescued each other later on in the film was a plus. And, once Thunder Jack explained to Ted his true involvement with Ted's deceased mother Lucy, and the fact that neither of them were ready to be parents when they decided to give Ted up for adoption...it became clear that old Thunder Jack was not so bad- deep down (and neither was Lucy). The end of the movie was quite touching. I especially liked Sisko's role as Rupert in the movie.

    Great family movie but beware!

The beginning of the movie has a fairly insensitive remark/reaction to adoption which left the adults sitting on the edge for the rest of the movie the first time we saw it but ultimately it is a terrific movie and both the kids and adults in my family love it.
