Overview

In this light-weight Disney family fare, Dean Jones plays Johnny Baxter, who -- along with his wife Sue (Nancy Olsen) and his two kids, Chris (Kathleen Cody) and Richard (Johnny Whittaker) -- decides to leave the New York City rat-race for the clean air and easy living of the Colorado ski country. Baxter has inherited a decaying Gothic mansion and, with the love of his family and a little bit of money, he converts the old house into a popular ski lodge. While preparing his lodge for the tourists and ski bums, Baxter has to deal with a few plumbing problems, a scheming banker (Keenan Wynn), and a grizzled old miner (Harry Morgan). In typical Disney fashion, the plot culminates in a wild, slapstick snowmobile race.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
For those who think that a workable high concept is "Dean Jones in the snow" -- and that apparently included the folks at Disney in the 1970s -- Snowball Express will be a sheer delight. Certainly, most kids will be entertained by this extremely innocuous and eager-to-please trifle, and tired adults who are looking for a seriously undemanding way to pass the time will also find themselves chuckling along with this agreeable if exceedingly lightweight film. The screenplay, of course, is by the numbers, as is the direction; but as formulaic as it all is, it's still a formula that actually works. The big finale goes on a bit too long, and the constant emphasis on physical comedy throughout becomes a bit distracting, but there are still enough payoffs to make it worthwhile. The all-semi-star cast helps to keep the film lively, with Dean Jones his usually goofy, endearing self, Harry Morgan appropriately crusty and odd, and Johnny Whitaker and Kathleen Cody cute. Snowball is not one of Disney's great films, but it's an amiable time filler.

This movie is one that the whole family will thoroughly enjoy. My children are 8 and 4 and they love it. I hadn't seen the movie since I was 14, but remember it being great and it is. I watched it again and it brought back great memories, a must have for the family. Very Very funny, real clean family entertainment...........
