Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Sólo Con Tu Pareja is an unevenly rendered, if imaginative, comedy that gains unexpected emotional traction toward its close. The feature debut by director Alfonso Cuarón, written by Cuarón and his brother Carlos, its one of the first films in a wave of Mexican cinema which includes Cuarón's friends Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro González Iñárritu that would gain sizable international momentum roughly ten years later with Cuarón's Y Tu Mamá También. It is a credit to the energy and visual ingenuity of Cuarón and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki that they are able to gloss over the more twisted elements of this film. The central story, in which callow playboy Tomás Tomás Daniel Jiménez Cacho receives his comeuppance when a nurse Dobrina Liubomirova, one of his ticked off conquests, switches his blood test results so that he thinks he has AIDS, is pretty disturbing even for a dark and irreverent comedy. The title translates as "Only With Your Partner," a joke on AIDS awareness advertisements. But as a dramatic tool, the premise smartly skewers Tomás' bourgeois insensitivities, forcing him to deal with his mortality and to rely on intellect to woo his pretty flight attendant neighbor Clarisa Claudia Ramirez. The comedy sequences, including an intricately conceived beginning where Tomás must navigate between two women in two apartments over the course of a night, never hit the rhythm and grace notes of '30s Hollywood classics like Trouble in Paradise, toward which Sólo Con Tu Pareja appears to aspire. Ultimately the movie works much better as a comedic drama about Tomás' maturation than a screwball farce. The action does click in the final act, when Tomás and Clarisa contemplate suicide and each other while a burgeoning cast of characters runs to save them. Here Cuarón's story and direction strike the right balance of romance, light comedy, pathos, and political satire combined with Lubezki's crisp imagery. It's a heady combination that's a hallmark of Cuarón's more mature and accomplished efforts.
