Overview

A love triangle erupts in writer John Hughes' classic '80s drama Some Kind of Wonderful. Paramount's work on this 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is very nice. Sporting a vast array of crisp colors and dark black levels, this transfer appears to be in very good shape. While a small amount of softness crops up in a few scenes, overall this is a solid effort from the studio that should please fans of the film. The soundtrack is presented in a newly created Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround mix in English. The biggest benefactor of this new remix is the music score -- otherwise, the surround sounds are focused in only the front and center speakers. All aspects of the soundtrack are free and clear of any hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are subtitles in English, as well as a Dolby Digital 2.0 track in English and French. Alas, Paramount has decided not to included even a single theatrical trailer on the edition of the film, making this a disappointingly bare-bones disc.

This movie is a teen comedy about dating, plans for the future, and being true to yourself. As in other John Hughes films, the movie doesn't talk down to teens and takes their emotions, fears, thoughts and dreams seriously. The performances of Thompson, Masterson and Stoltz are fantastic. I believe this was Masterson's first film, and she's amazing in it. Stoltz is great as Keith, the misfit who at the end does get the girl. It's one I remember from my adolescence, and love that is available on DVD.
