Overview

A woman discovers that when it comes to love, sometimes opposites really do attract in this romantic comedy-drama. Kenya Sanaa Lathan is a successful African-American lawyer in her mid-thirties whose personal life is not going as well as her career. While she's attractive and intelligent, Kenya has rather high standards and isn't willing to settle for a man who isn't everything she wants. While attending a party, Kenya is introduced to Brian Simon Baker, a landscape architect who handles the gardening at her host's mansion. Brian is immediately and obviously attracted to Kenya, through she doesn't feel the same way at all. However, she likes his work and hires him to refurbish her garden; before long, he asks her out on a date, and against her better judgment she accepts. While Kenya and Brian have little in common, in time they hit it off, and a romance begins to blossom between them. However, Brian happens to be white, which ruffles some feathers among Kenya's friends and family, who try to find her a more suitable, African-American suitor. Also starring Mike Epps, Donald Faison, Blair Underwood, and Alfre Woodard, Something New was the first feature film for director Sanaa Hamri, who previously established herself by directing music videos.

"Something New" is "Hot and Sweet" (and a must-see)!!

If you're tempted to bypass "Something New" as just another "chick flick," DON'T. You'd be missing out on a surprising gem of a movie that's a new addition to my collection of all-time favorite movies. Unlike most so-called romantic comedies, "Something New" delivers the perfect balance of laughs and love, with a dash of wisdom thrown in for good measure. Presenting the still-sticky subject of interracial romance in film is not the easiest task, much less in the form of a romantic comedy. Most the few films that have attempted it typically play the subject strictly for laughs (e.g., "Guess Who," starring Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac) at the expense of true emotion and plot development. However, director Sanaa Hamri and the other talented African-American women at the helm of "Something New" make it look easy, bringing a fresh perspective to interracial romance - keeping the comedy without losing the romance or the underlying message. The stellar cast of this movie makes it a delight to watch. Sanaa Lathan is positively luminous in this film, beautifully intense and expressive as the type-A, conflicted, and complex "Kenya." It is a real treat to watch Sanaa make her character bloom on screen, much like the garden that is the metaphorical backdrop of "Something New." Aussie actor Simon Baker was perfectly cast as the male lead, "Brian," an easy-going, sexy, and somewhat spiritual landscaper, who is clearly smitten with Kenya from the start. Yet, rather than over-acting the role of the romantic suitor, Simon Baker is understated, genuinely expressive and altogether real. He also does a great job of making Brian imperfectly human, rather than just another big-screen heartthrob. Sanaa and Simon's wonderfully-flawed characters play at their absolute best during the "supermarket scene," which is one of the best scenes in the movie. Sanaa and Simon have great on-screen chemistry...the undertone of attraction and sexual tension is palpable from their first meeting. Their love scenes are steamy, but tastefully sensual, delivering all the heat without gratuitous nudity. All-in-all, Something New is an uplifting movie, with a universal lesson: Love doesn't always follow societal expectations or logically-constructed "lists" of criteria. Letting go and opening yourself up to "Something New" in love and in life can sometimes bring the biggest rewards.

    Refreshing!

Compared to a lot of the violent, over-the-top, plot-driven stories told on the big screen, I found this movie to be very entertaining. It was a character-driven story about two people. Brian did not have any hang-ups, while Kenya had several. You'll love the ending.

Didn't live up to my expectations

I was so excited to see this movie, but I was not pleased after I watched it. This movie was full of racial comments having to do with both races. There were also too many intimate scences between the couple for me.

    Sensational

As a huge Simon Baker fan, this is one of his best performances. The entire cast was delightful and kept true to the main idea--go with your heart, not others expectations. I'm so glad we bought it, because we will watch it over and over again.

    Beautiful performances

I loved Simon Baker in this film. He never impressed me before this, now I stop to give his other movies a closer look.

I have never considered Sanaa a great actress, but I love her movies, especially this one. She manages to portray a real person each time. She manages to capture the misgivings and the vulnerability that most of us feel in entering a new situation.

With all of that aside, I just simply love the movie.

    Something New-movie

I really enjoyed this movie(DVD) because I love the two love interest Sanaa Lathan, Simon Baker. The story is about two people who are from diffence background you can see the slow attaction to each other. Kenya McQueen, is a woman who has a list of things that her future mate must have before she would give him the time of day. She has work so very hard in this accounting firm that she is being offer a chance to make partner. By doing this she has not had a date for two years. She does not do blind date but her girlfriends tell her that she need to forget about her list and give the guys a chance. But when she decide to go on the blind date she is still using her list and by doing that she just mark the good looking man Brian Kelly off because he was not on list in her mind. There are times in this movie that you realize that she lives her life worrying what other people might think of her and not going with her heart. I will stop here before I tell you the whole movie. Simon Baker, is so good looking and has such a great smile. The soundtrack in this movie is good too. Also a movie that I enjoyed that I recommend is The Secret Laughter of Women with Colin Firth, Nia Long that I could not find to add to my list.

    Something New for Everyone

Great way to see two sides of this continually challenging dating issue. The performances were good and the story-line as well. Added to my movie collection already.

    LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!

It's about time to see a White man want and embrace a black woman the way Simon Baker's character did in this movie. It was so Romantic.... Society portrays successful black women as tough, unapproachable and career driven, but we are vulnerable, passionate, and lovable. this movie was great.
