Something Wild

Overview

Jonathan Demme's classic offbeat '80s movie Something Wild comes to life on DVD care of MGM Home Entertainment. Something Wild has finally been released in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, and this is the best the picture has ever looked. Presented in anamorphic widescreen, the colors and flesh tones are vivid and natural, with blacks especially solid. Though the image features a few blemishes and imperfections, overall MGM has done a very nice job with this transfer. Audio is presented in Dolby Stereo Surround ...

Audio is presented in Dolby Stereo Surround 2.0 in English, as well as Dolby Mono 1.0 in French. The Dolby 2.0 track includes finely mixed dialogue, effects, and music, though the surround feature is not utilized to its full extent. Also included on the disc are French and Spanish subtitles. Curiously, Something Wild includes only an original theatrical trailer under the bonus features menu. Since Something Wild is somewhat of a cult hit, it's surprising that MGM has decided to release this disc as an almost bare-bones edition. As is often the case with MGM titles, the studio may decide to double dip on this feature and release a special edition sometime in the near future. Until then, fans are stuck with a DVD edition of Something Wild that is anything but wild.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Robert Firsching
Jonathan Demme's stylistic choices here hearken back to such 1930s screwball comedies as Bringing Up Baby, with a liberal dose of the danger and insanity of Martin Scorsese's After Hours. The tone of much of this film is lighter than Scorsese's, though, making the transition from comedy to thriller even more disarming when it occurs. A beautifully structured screenplay by E. Max Frye and believable performances with a dark and strangely erotic edge make this a film that really lives up to its title. The three leads all do excellent work. Ray Liotta is nasty and menacing in his role, chasing the pair to New York and nearly kicking them both to pieces with his steel-tipped boots before meeting a gory demise. Perhaps Liotta is even a bit too menacing, as his sadistic thrashings of Daniels and Griffith threaten to throw off the balance of the film at times, but Demme eventually gets things back on track for a traditional happy ending.
