Meryl Streep's heartbreaking, amazingly tempered performance in Sophie's Choice confirmed her status as one of America's greatest actresses; many believe it will stand the test of time as her finest work. It's a testament to Kevin Kline's skills that he can hold his own in the role of her boyfriend. In terms of structure, William Styron's flashback-laden novel must have been a challenge to translate to the screen, but writer-director Alan J. Pakula does a fine job of condensing the material without losing its essence. A less-mature filmmaker might have lost the tone of the picture from the start. Pakula's script would be nominated for an Academy Award; Streep would win her first Oscar for a lead performance.

    One of the Best

    Sophie's Choice is one of my very favorite movies. The subject matter is heart rending and Sophie's ' choice' is one we never want to have to make! Meryl Street, expert actress, is incomparable in this role.

    However, it is not in English Subtitles and with a hearing glitch I miss a lot of the dialogue. Fortunately people with this handicap build a coping sense and can figure it all out somehow. If I knew Spanish I would be all set...and doesn't that getcha? If anyone out there knows where I can get this DVD with english subtitles I would be eternally grateful!

    Meryl Streep - Above and beyond ANYONE!

    Meryl Streep shows the world of acting how it´s done!!!!
    This is simply perfection in it´s most sublime and elegant form.

    Sophie´s Choice is one of those movies that will live with you forever. One that leaves you to think, smile, cry - but also to stop and take stock of your life. Value what you have and not complain about all the non-important things.

    Kevin Kline and Peter MacNichol are excellent but NO ONE comes even close to Meryl Streep as Sophie.

    A MUST HAVE MOVIE.

    Very sad and confusing

    This was a very confusing movie. It seemed to jump around alot and was boring at best. It had some humor but was basically a very sad movie.

    riveting & historical

    The performances of Kevin Kline and Meryl Streep was phenonemal. Kline should have won a Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor award in this 1982 film. Streep was adorable and she shows her flexibility as an actress.
    Secondly, this film will be a great addition to our Holocaust Studies where I have been teaching this subject for over twenty years.
