South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut

( 26 )

Overview

The South Park animated television show has cultivated an enormous following, and this crudely funny and supremely foul-mouthed spin-off movie has been given competent if less than extravagant DVD treatment. The minimalist animation that is the trademark of South Park does not exemplify the wonders of DVD as well as the likes of Fantasia 2000, but South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut blends in some impressive CGI that really comes into its own in the smooth, anamorphic widescreen transfer.

Sound-wise, there is a choice of Dolby 5.1 or Surround Sound, which ensures that the marvelous musical numbers (not to mention the expletives) can be heard in crystal clarity. Unfortunately there are few additional features of any note. The menu screen is amusing, and scene access is deftly handled, plus those of a hardy disposition may enjoy watching the film with the subtitles on (watch those obscenities roll by!). However, the trailers are of limited appeal, the teaser in particular suffering without the surprise element that made it funny in cinemas. Though a commentary would perhaps not have worked, a little background to the film would have been welcome, particularly given the involvement of George Clooney, Minnie Driver, and the rest. This DVD will probably be essential for most South Park fans, but it is still something of a missed opportunity.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Easily the most outrageous animated feature film spawned by a TV series, South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut flogs innumerable victims with its satirical lash, and does so with cheerful, unapologetic subversiveness. Kyle, Stan, Cartman, and Kenny sneak into a Canadian-made R-rated! film starring the irrepressible Terrence and Philip. When the boys emulate their foul-mouthed faves, the entire town rises in protest and eventually instigates a war with Canada -- much to the delight of hell-bound lovers Sadam Hussein and Satan, who would love to use the conflict to conquer earth. Mayhem ensues. To top it all off, the movie's also a musical...of sorts. The hilarious songs, penned by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone with help from Hollywood vet Marc Shaiman, come complete with sprawling dance sequences and include comic takes on everything from the mythic adventures of figure skater Brian Boitano to patriotic anthems, like the Oscar-nominated "Blame Canada." Bigger, Longer, and Uncut might be tasteless, as its detractors have contended, but it's also easily the most audacious animated film recently produced in this country.
All Movie Guide - Perry Seibert
There are two distinct reasons that South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut should be appreciated. First, it is one of the few major Hollywood releases that directly addresses the way the entertainment industry and parents both shape youth culture. The satire on this point is sharp and uncompromising. The adults recognize the Terrence and Phillip movie for what it is -- stupid and vulgar. Instead of discussing it with their kids, the parents choose a scapegoat. Secondly, this is one of the best movie musicals of the '90s. Trey Parker, working closely with soundtrack guru Marc Shaiman, created a dozen original songs that spoofed popular music, and, more impressively, beloved Broadway musicals like Les Miserables and The Sound of Music. Their Oscar nomination for Best Song was a (probably grudging) acknowledgement that they had crafted songs that added characterization and advanced the plot, while also working as both parody and entertainment even when removed from the context of the film. Not for the faint of heart or the easily offended, South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut is a hybrid of styles rarely seen in movies. It is both an uncompromising satire, and a brilliant musical.

    more from this reviewer

    I Also Recommend:

    The greatest musical ever!!!!!!!

This is a fantastic movie. There are several great songs in it including a song sung by Satan himself. Contrary to what one reviewer said there isn't a song every 2 minutes. There is far more dialog than music in the movie. The bases of the movie is similar to the first season episode "death" in the way that all the controversy in the movie surrounds all the mothers freaking out about Terrance and Phillip. The movie basically lampoons itself and themes like freedom of speech and censorship are brought up in the course of the film. Basically if you aren't offended by musicals and you love South Park this movie will make you so happy.

    "Hey You Fat Ass!"

The greatest fourth graders turn to the big screen for their first time in this rousing comedy while berating everbody from Satan and Saddam Hussein to Brian Bortano. I love you guys! Love it when Saddam gets killed by the lovable Satan. Everybody should have sympathy for the Satan here!

    The. Best. Movie. Everrrrrr.

I absolutely loved it. Especially the Cartman-is-DBZ part. The songs were outrageous, and everyone I know goes around saying "It's easy mmmkay!" South Park continues to impress . . . I just wish Kenny would come back from being dead in thebvg 6th season.

The funniest movie I have ever seen, I almost died laughing watching it!!!

I've seen this movie twice. The first time I watched, I couldn't stop laughing. I was laughing so hard, it hurt, I thought I was gonna cry. The second time I watched it, I was cracking up just as much as the first time I watched it. I've seen so many funny movies, but this is the holy grail of comedys, and one of my favorite movies, and one of the best movies of all time.

    Brilliant!

This is my favorite musical other than Nightmare Before Christmas. Trey Parker and Matt Stone truly are genius writers. And the music really is good. They were getting praise from real Broadway writers. If thats not cool...then i dont know wut is.

    They should stick to TV

How do you make an hour and a half long movie when you only have 22 minutes of material? Fill it with awful songs! I'm a huge South Park fan, but this thing was sooooo awful that I couldn't even finish watching it. By the end, there is a song every 2 minutes. Skip the movie, but the full season DVDs.

    Over the top

Many movies try to go over the top, only to fail. The failure always stem from stopping short of offending the majority of the target audience. Thus, if the target audience is White Christians, poking fun at gays will work but poking fun of God is a major taboo. South Park does not suffer from this vice...they are an equal opportunity offender from the first second to the final second. Easily the funniest movie I've ever seen. I spent equal time holding my gut from laughing and scraping my jaw off the floor in amazement of what they were willing to do and say. If you are a sensitive type who believes in taboos around any topic, this movie will not be for you....but if you are like me and believe our most cherished beliefs are just darn good writing material, then have at it.

I enjoyed this movie that I bought the DVD and love it.Although they keep syaing the ''F'' word which sometimes gets pretty annoying but other than that this movie is totally good!Don't let little kids see this or they may repeat some of the words! Great movie for a sunny afternoon of rainy night.
