Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Bill Pearis
One might think that, five years into their run, Comedy Central's gleefully obscene South Park creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, would have run out of fresh ideas for their pint-sized potty-mouths. Far from it: Season 5 (2001-2) has some of the series' best, most outrageous episodes, and almost all of them feature Cartman front-and-center. "Scott Tenorman Must Die," is arguably South Park's crowning achievement. Here, Cartman seeks revenge against an eighth grader from whom he purchased an item in a misguided attempt to be the first of his friends to reach puberty. His retaliation scheme involves a specially trained pony, special guest stars Radiohead, and a chili cook-off, and the episode's finale remains hilariously shocking through repeated viewings. Coming a close second is "It Hits the Fan," where the clamor and controversy surrounding hit TV show Cop Drama's announcement that it will air the word "sh*t" unbleeped reaches a fever pitch. Comedy Central didn't bleep the word, either, which was uttered 162 times during the episode -- a counter in the corner of the screen helpfully keeps track. Other Season 5 classics include: "Cripple Fight," wherein Timmy clashes with newcomer Jimmy, a physically challenged amateur comedian; Cartman purchases his own amusement park so he can always be first in line for the rides in "Cartmanland," but upkeep costs cause his plan to backfire; sex education is added to the curriculum in "Proper Condom Use"; and the kids deal with the aftermath of September 11th in "Osama Bin Laden Has Poopy Pants" -- a potentially sensitive subject that Parker and Stone deftly handle by turning the hunt for the al Qaeda leader into a Bugs Bunny homage. Additionally, sweet and innocent Butters gets his own episode, and we meet for the first -- and last -- time the hilarious new character Towelie. If you need more than that, you're just going to have to wait for Season 6.
