South Park - The Complete Ninth Season

( 4 )

Overview

Comedy Central are getting speedier all the time in releasing the animated comedy series South Park on DVD, and this package, featuring all fourteen episodes of season nine, was released just fifteen months after the final show of the season, Bloody Mary, was aired (and about six months after season eight came out on disc). Their promptness is especially surprising given the controversy generated by the episodes "Trapped In The Closet" and "Bloody Mary," both of which were rumored to never air again or even ...

Overview

Comedy Central are getting speedier all the time in releasing the animated comedy series South Park on DVD, and this package, featuring all fourteen episodes of season nine, was released just fifteen months after the final show of the season, Bloody Mary, was aired (and about six months after season eight came out on disc). Their promptness is especially surprising given the controversy generated by the episodes "Trapped In The Closet" and "Bloody Mary," both of which were rumored to never air again or even appear on DVD, but while this set will doubtless please fans glad to see these and other episodes preserved for the ages, it's a bit short on extras. All fourteen episodes on South Park: The Complete Ninth Season have been transferred to disc in their original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and look good, with sharp focus and crisp color, though the digital format does sometimes beak up curved lines on screen. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo, and the quality is very good, sounding strong and vivid. However, the dialogue is in English with no multiple language options and no subtitles are included. As with the past several full-season South Park box sets, this package includes "mini-commentaries" from creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone for each episode, but they generally last no more than four or five minutes, and often pose as many questions as they answer about each installment. Beyond these, the package contains no extras, other than previews for other Comedy Central DVD releases, posted on disc one (which play automatically when starting the disc) and brief sketches from South Park, The Colbert Report, Mind of Mencia and Drawn Together (which, again, all appear on disc one). While South Park fans who've bought the first eight season on DVD will see no reason to stop now, and the technical quality of this set is just fine, it's a bit of a shame that Comedy Central couldn't find some additional goodies to add some extra value to The Complete Ninth Season.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Bill Pearis
Although shock and outrage have been standard features in South Park's operations since day one, Season 9 nonetheless became the series' most controversial yet, thanks to two button-pushing episodes. The Emmy-nominated "Trapped in the Closet" satirized Scientology (and its most famous proponent), while simultaneously parodying R. Kelly's outlandish "hip-hop-era" as well. Like all of South Park's best episodes, it balances topicality and absurdity with hilarious results. The other episode, "Bloody Mary," drew ire from the Roman Catholic Church, thanks to its depiction of a "miracle" involving a statue of the Virgin Mary. Comedy Central only aired the episode twice, but you can see it here in all its profane glory. One could argue that the season's funniest episodes drew far less attention. Jimmy wonders if his raging hormones will affect his chances in the school talent show in "Erection Day"; Stan reluctantly joins the Little League team, and his father aspires to be the ultimate "trash-talking dad" in "The Losing Edge"; and in "Die, Hippie, Die," Cartman confronts his greatest enemy when a jam band festival invades town. Where most shows lose steam after a few seasons, South Park remains as offensively funny as ever. Thank goodness for their disturbed minds.

    A very good season

"Mr. Garrison's Fancy New Vagina" is a great episode, where Mr. Garrison's "surgically removed parts" end up on Kyle's father and himself when they get their dolphinplasty and negroplasty rofl! the majority of the episodes are awesome in this season.
