I had my reservations about South Riding but was pleasantly surprised when I watched it. The characters are deeply flawed, but lovable, and the Yorkshire scenery is fabulous. I found the story to be incredibly powerful, the character of Robert Carne is delightfully human and on the dramatic scale of Ayn Rand's Hank Rearden. Sarah Burton is a conflicted woman, she knows what, and who, she wants but is afraid to be hurt again. South Riding is gritty, funny, and heartbreaking with an overwhelming realism that is not always pleasant. The story line is a little chaotic with so many different stories overlapping, but this adds to the truthful way in which life in a small village is portrayed. This is the sort of story that everyone should experience at least once. The predominant message that comes through the film is to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and dig in to get it done. The admonition that you have the responsibility to live your life and abide by your choices without anyone else to fix your problems is something that is sorely needed in our times and beautifully presented through South Riding.
