Overview

Not everyone remembers Space 1999, the British television series from the mid-'70s that starred Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, but there is a loyal fan base, and they were certainly excited to see A&E Entertainment release episodes on DVD. While those fans will be happy they were released at all, they might be disappointed in the overall package. Each set has two volumes with six episodes, which run about 50 minutes each. The first set features the pilot episode "Breakaway" plus "Matter of Life and Death, "Black Sun, "Ring Around the Moon, "Earthbound, and "Another Time, Another Place." All are presented full frame as originally shown, but unfortunately, A&E Entertainment did next to no restoration work. While the episodes are watchable, they suffer from a large amount of grain and are never very sharp in detail. Granted, it is television, but even a program from 25 years ago should look better than this. The sound is a two-channel mono and is no more or less than would be expected. Dialogue is clear and distortion-free, and one can't ask for much more than that. It's the extras that will disappoint, as all that is included are some production photos with a couple of behind-the-scenes shots. This is certainly not something to get excited about. Still, credit has to be given that these episodes are simply being released on DVD; for now that will have to suffice.

Suppose Earth sent all its atomic waste to the Moon and, one day, that waste exploded, sending the third rock from the sun's sole natural satellite careening off into uncharted space? In 1975, this ambitious notion fueled Space: 1999, a series produced by British sci-fi TV legends Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the husband-and-wife puppeteer auteur team that gave the world "supermarionation" and such cherished kids TV staples as Thunderbirds. Rather than imagining the devastation that would result on Earth, though, the Andersons made the space station Moonbase Alpha the centerpiece of their program, tracing the trials of the waste-station team sent uwittingly off on Mr. Moon's Wild Ride. The Anglo-American cast is led by the erstwhile Mission: Impossible partners and off-screen husband-and-wife Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, with many British TV greats filling guest roles from time to time. Most memorable is Barry Morse, who makes an especially delicious character of Professor Victor Bergman through the show's first season. Remastered from the original 35 mm prints, the A&E DVD releases begin with six episodes in each DVD collection. Set 1: Volumes 1-6 includes: "Broadway," "Matter of Life and Death," "Black Sun," "Ring Around the Moon," "Earthbound," and "Another Time, Another Place."
