Collecting the first eight early episodes, with an additional eight hand-picked ones after that, this double-disc set should please old fans and new with this hilarious look at the initial incarnation of the show. On the technical side, the Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo and crisp full-frame image work perfectly for each disc, giving the Hanna Barbara-inspired animation a perfect home for years to come. Extras include commentary tracks for "Elevator, "Batmantis, and the un-aired "Story Book House" on the first disc, while the second disc's episodes "Girlie Show" and "Fire Drill" come complete with alternate tracks as well. Disc one also sports an original artwork section featuring storyboards and never-before-seen storyboard shots, while disc two's extras are rounded out by Zorak's music video rendition of "Jingle Bells." While most episodes sporting multiple laugh-out-loud moments, the insight from the writers, producers, and voice actors are also just as priceless -- which should make this set a priority for any lover of the nonsensical show. With this great start to the series, one can look forward to more Space Ghost and pals with further volumes, along with releases covering the brilliance that is Cartoon Planet.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Live, from deep in outer space, it's washed-up '60s Hanna-Barbera cartoon superhero turned late-night talk show host, Space Ghost. The signature original program from Cartoon Network's early days (1994), Space Ghost Coast to Coast took to the air in 15-minute form, featuring Space Ghost in the host's chair with two villains from his salad days, Zoltar and Zorak, as his director and music director, respectively. Guests appeared "live" via remote in a TV screen that dropped down next to Mr. Ghost's desk, where he subjected them to questions that inevitably included variations on the "What are your superpowers?" theme. Just shy of genius and never short of fun, Space Ghost Coast to Coast succeeded in part by never letting its guests seem to be "in" on the joke. That is, despite the artifice necessary to make it seem that a cartoon character was conducting interviews, the interplay always felt spontaneous. This 16-episode set collects the program's earliest outings and makes a strong case for considering Space Ghost alongside America 2Night's Barth Gimble and Primetime Glick's Jiminy Glick in the faux-host hall of fame. The episodes and guests follow:
Disc 1:
  • "Elevator" featuring Judy Tenuta, Timothy Leary, and Ashley Judd
  • "Spanish Translation" featuring Kevin Meany and the Bee Gees
  • "Gilligan" featuring Bob Denver, Dawn Wells, and Russell Johnson
  • "CHiPs" featuring Joe Franklin and Bill Carter
  • "Bobcat" featuring Bobcat Goldthwait and the Ramones
  • "Punch" featuring Cindy Guyer, Jerky Boys, and Dian Parkinson
  • "Banjo" featuring Schooly D and Weird Al Yankovic
  • "Batmantis" featuring Adam West, Lee Meriwether, and Eartha Kitt
  • "Story Book House" featuring Kirk the Storyteller, and Carl the Cartoonist Disc 2:
  • "Girlie Show" featuring Frank Drescher, Carol Channing, and Alice Cooper
  • "Hungry" featuring Michael Stipe, Lassie, Sirajul and Mujibur
  • "Fire Drill" featuring David Byrne and Donny Osmond
  • "Sleeper" featuring Hulk Hogan and Slash
  • "Jerk" featuring Palmer Mills and Sandra Bernhard
  • "Urges" featuring Catherine Bach and Matthew Sweet

Space Ghost Coast to Coast is a Classic

Space Ghost Coast to Coast is down right hilarious and brings back wonderful memories of when Space Ghost was battling his nemisis Zorak, Brak and Moltar. Zorak, Brak and Moltar definitely spice up the show along with Space Ghost's dialogue antics.

He always has great guests on the show. Great for all audiences. A must have for your DVD library

    Excellence in madness

An episode of this show was made available on the VHS of The Mask. First time I saw it, I was hooked, and wore out the tape watching that alone. The concept is brilliant, the writers possibly insane, and everyone involved seems to be having the time of their lives and doing what they want. Season 1 presents the show still in its formulative stage, obviously, and consequently it can be kind of sketchy in spots and canned in other spots, but overall it's a great show. Buy it, and obviously buy the rest of the series.
