Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Certainly the most popular comic-book superhero created during the baby-boom years, the amazing Spider-Man makes an impressive live-action debut in director Sam Raimi’s colorful and dynamic adventure film. Best of all, this extravagantly produced tribute to the character created in 1962 by Marvel Comics’ Stan Lee and Steve Ditko is refreshingly free of the condescension and campiness that mars so many movies adapted from comics. Tobey Maguire, whose screen persona is that of a mild-mannered, perceptive young man, is perfectly cast as Peter Parker, the socially maladroit high school student who develops strange powers after being bitten by a genetically altered super-spider. Winsome Kirsten Dunst plays Mary Jane, the popular girl whom he secretly loves, even though she’s dating his best friend, Harry James Franco. Willem Dafoe all but steals the show with his bombastic portrayal of Spider-Man’s archenemy, the grotesquely costumed Green Goblin -- the genetically altered alter ego of Harry’s troubled father. While taking minor liberties with the character’s origin, Spider-Man remains remarkably faithful to both the spirit and the letter of Marvel’s four-color favorite. Flamboyant stunt work and computer-generated special effects lend credibility to the film’s elaborate fight scenes, but Raimi never loses sight of the human element, the fact that his young protagonist feels burdened by the awesome powers bestowed upon him. Maguire’s likability makes his Peter Parker a figure with whom audiences can empathize, no matter how outlandish his feats while garbed as the web-crawling superhero. A perfect popcorn movie, Spider-Man will delight adventure-loving viewers of all ages. The two-disc DVD Special Edition features a cornucopia of supplemental features, including: commentaries by Raimi, Dunst, and other members of the production team; an HBO "making-of" special; the E! Entertainment documentary "Spider-Mania"; screen tests; outtakes; DVD-ROM content; and much more.
All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
Following through on the promise of director Bryan Singer's engagingly earnest but scattershot X-Men, Sam Raimi's big-budget, high-stakes screen version of Spider-Man represents a welcome return to some of the qualities found in the best Hollywood entertainments: satisfying character development, a palpable sense of wonder and amazement, and genuine, unironic good humor. After years of numbing, frenetic action pictures -- from the latter efforts in the Batman series to The Mummy Returns and its ilk -- the care and attention paid to Spider-Man's source material seems almost old-fashioned, in the best possible way. Raimi and ace screenwriter David Koepp retain the best elements of comic-book grammar and syntax -- in the dialogue as well as the pulpy, colorful montage sequences -- as they take minor but justified liberties with the comic's physical details. What's more, the once-controversial casting of talented young actor Tobey Maguire pays off in a big way: his pensive, quizzical nature is a perfect fit for the character. Rarely has there been a more believable everyman (or everygeek, as it were) in a superhero lead, and Maguire's fun with the role is infectious. If minor gripes can be made about the design and execution of the film -- there's an inconsistency in the look of some of the action scenes, for one -- they're quickly forgotten; this is one blockbuster where talk and interpersonal action go hand-in-hand with the thrills. More than just a victory of maximum-saturation marketing, Spider-Man's record-breaking success at the box office can only be interpreted as a sign of audiences responding to a blockbuster that for once follows through on its promise, with characters actually worth caring about.
New York Times
The filmmakers have succeeded in rejuvenating the character while staying faithful to his roots. A.O. Scott
Hollywood Reporter
Guileless and charming with a perpetual look of startled bewilderment at the super powers he possesses, Maguire is perfect as an ordinary guy with a big secret. Kirk Honeycutt
New York Post

A surprisingly charming and even witty match for the best of Hollywood's comic-book adaptations. Jonathan Foreman

The filmmakers have succeeded in rejuvenating the character while staying faithful to his roots. A.O. Scott

Don't Waste your time on this movie. I did not live when the original spiderman came out. But I think the new one (with Andrew Garfield) is so much better, that the old , movie was not. In my opinion, Andrew Garfield was a better spiderman. Probably because Andrew actually was spiderman fan unlike Toby who never read the comics. Anyway Mary-Jane was so annoying. She screamed too much. While watching the movie I was like, "SHUT UP MARY JANE! YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF!" Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) never screamed once in the new one, where Mary Jane screams and cries like 1000 time. The original Spiderman was cheesy. Slow motion was used too much. Everything was too predictable. I just feel the new one is SO MUCH BETTER!! In conclusion, don't waste your time on the old one, watch the one with a funny main character and a girl who role models for girls. ~ Julia, age 12

    Spider-Man Letdown

This film was to be the ''Great One'' of the summer. All the reviewers raved, fans flocked to the theaters, and then they raved. The fact is, this film is unexeptional. The acting is mediocre, and the special effects are dated. Half the time Spider-Man is created by a computer. Instead of buying this film, try to get something that rises above an attempt to milk a franchise.

    Spider-Man rocks!!

this was definetly ''The Movie'' of the summer.I LOVED Peter Parker! and Tobey Maguire is the sweetest actor over the earth.I haven't known an actor before that shows his emotions as he did.Great effects, excellent actors, extraordinary message, excellent music. If there would be a possibility for me to choose an Oscar winner,Spider-Man deserves the GOLDEN!! and Tobey as Best Actor.
