Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Creator Stephen Hillenburg and his able-bodied crew do not allow the waters to stagnate in Season 3 of SpongeBob Squarepants, which includes some of this rollicking series’ very best episodes, including the fan favorite “Krusty Krab Training Video.” In this landmark episode, viewers get all the POOP (People Order Our Patties) on what it takes to work at the Krusty Krab. This season also sees the emergence of Patchy the Pirate (Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob) in three very special half-hour episodes that recapture some of the nuttiness of the late, lamented Pee-wee’s Playhouse: “SpongeBob’s House Party,” “SpongeBob B.C. (Before Comedy),” and “Lost Episode (The Sponge Who Could Fly”). Senior superheroes Mermaidman and Barnacleboy (voiced by a game Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway) make triumphant returns in “IV” and “V.” Other memorable episodes include “Born Again Krabs," in which a hospitalized Mr. Krabbs makes a desperate vow to the Flying Dutchman to be more generous; and the surreal "I Had an Accident," in which a recuperating SpongeBob is so fearful of leaving the safety of his pineapple abode that even a gorilla attack on Sandy and Patrick may not change his mind. The subversively silly spirit of Termite Terrace (the legendary birthplace of the classic Warner Bros. cartoon characters) flows through SpongeBob. Many of these episodes were already netted for previously released episode compilations, but with this three-disc set, you can catch the ones that got away.
