Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
A medical soap opera that borrowed the Hill Street Blues concept of employing a sizable cast of principals and interlacing each episode with multiple story lines, St. Elsewhere anticipated such subsequent hospital-set dramas as ER and Grey's Anatomy. While well received by critics when it debuted in 1982, the series always lagged in the ratings; but its relatively well-heeled audience as determined by NBC’s research allowed the network to charge premium advertising rates. In six seasons, the series earned 63 Emmy nominations, won 13, and made a star of Denzel Washington. The future Oscar winner’s Dr. Phillip Chandler was just one of many interns staffing South Boston's St. Eligius, a somewhat less than state-of-the-art hospital that catered to the underprivileged and downtrodden. Other medicos on staff during the show's first season included Dr. Donald Westphall Ed Flanders, Dr. Jack Morrison David Morse, Dr. Ben Samuels David Birney, Dr. Annie Cavanero Cynthia Sikes, Dr. Wayne Fiscus Howie Mandel, and Dr. Daniel Auschlander Norman Lloyd. The latter's heartrending struggle against cancer formed one of the year's most memorable subplots. One plot thread that stirred a bit of controversy was Ben's discovery that he had contracted a venereal disease, which spurred him to track down previous lovers. Among the Season 1 episodes that stand out are "Cora and Arnie," which gave plum roles to character actors Doris Roberts and James Coco, playing a bag lady and her mentally challenged husband, respectively. A gang war in the inner-city streets resulted in an overflow of patients for Morrison and Chandler in "Remission," another terrific episode. Unusual for shows of this type, St. Elsewhere hit its stride right at the start, and its overall excellence is readily apparent in this collection of 22 episodes from the 1982-83 season. Co-creators Joshua Brand and John Falsey, who had been writers on The White Shadow, later went on to produce Northern Exposure.

    1980's Hospital Drama Still Shines

Not sure what triggered the desire to re-visit "St. Elsewhere", but I'm glad I did. This series had the winning combination of engaging story lines, intelligent dialogue, and complex characters. Set in St. Eligius, a Boston teaching hospital, "St. Elsewhere" takes the interactions of seasoned doctors, over-worked resident doctors, nurses, support staff, and patients and serves up both highly-charged drama and superb humor. The patients who weave in and out of the stories, with a variety of ailments and families and friends, provide an ideal backdrop for incorporating topical subjects (for the time) and talented guest actors.

Granted, watching it in 2010, the hospital and medical environment seems so dated: the computers are few, the doctors carry pagers, and the files are all kept on paper. In one episode, the hospital administrator, played by a young Christopher Guest, types his resignation letter on a typewriter. Still, the emotions evoked by a couple wrestling with a decision to abort a Down's Syndrome baby; or by Dr. Wayne Fiscus (played by Howie Mandel), having been rattled enough by an assault in the ER that he begins carrying a hand-gun and pulls it on a gang member; or by a psychiatric patient who believes himself to be a bird keep me riveted.

I recommend this DVD set for anyone who loved "St. Elsewhere" when it first aired; for anyone who waited each week for Dr. Mark Craig (William Daniels) to enlighten or admonish Dr. Ehrlich (Ed Begley, Jr.); for anyone who appreciates great television performed by award-winning actors.

St. Elsewhere- my favorite TV show EVER!!!!

This is a great series. After working in the medical profession since 1972 I can tell you this is how it really is in a hospital! Besides a stunning ensemble of actors who became noteworthy, there are scads of guest actors that became famous in the 80's & 90" Eric Stoltz, Pauly Shore, Ray Charles, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Tom Hulce, Jane Kaczmarek, Lainie Kazan, Jayne Meadows, Laraine Newman, James Coco, Doris Roberts, Piper Laurie, Alan Arkin, Robert Davi, Christopher Guest, Lance Guest, Ray Liotta, Michael Learned, Betty White, Michael Madsen, Stephen Elliott, Ernie Hudson, Kate Mulgrew, Kathy Bates, John Astin, Michael Richards, Austin Pendleton, Kyle Secor, Jason Bateman, Tim Thomerson, Harold Gould, Bill Macy, Herb Edelman, Alex Rocco, Brenda Vaccaro, Blythe Danner (wife of producer Bruce Paltrow), Eva Le Gallienne, and then-Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis, Judith Light, Tim Robbins, Robert Pastorelli, and the list goes on.
I think this set is worth every penny. I would pay an arm and a leg for the entire set.
I have never seen this in syndication in my area.
Come on MTM Productions..give us more St. Elsewhere.

Great start, but where's the rest?

I give this set a 4 because the packaging is second-rate, at best. Otherwise it is a 5 - a terrific ensemble cast settling into roles which some of them would fill for five more years. While it shows its age -- it contains references to current events which, at the time, were funny but now have to be looked up -- the general tenor of the show is timeless. It has extended story lines, strong and consistent character portraits and development, quirks and oddities, all jumbled together with the usual hospital drama. My current beef is with Fox, who has not released anything but the first season. I would hope a schedule of at least one season per year "and more if possible" would be doable. So many vastly inferior series have been released in toto since this was released that one has to wonder whether Fox is weighing potential sales volume too heavily as against establishing a quality series release reputation, which it has failed to do. I have an additional beef, apparently beyond studio control: all original songs are dubbed over by second-rate versions recorded by cut-rate bands, because securing the rights would be cost-prohibitive. WKRP suffers from the same problem, which is why I won't buy it.

    ST. ELSEWHERE

A Bunch of Doctors working & have bunch of stories w/ them too. Practically a celebrity type tv-series. All familiar faces you'll reconize - some before they became big & famous as they are now. Such as Mark Harmon ( NCIS ): Denzel Washington Howie Mandell etc
