Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
A likable film punctuated by standout performances, Stand by Me is an interesting variation on the standard coming-of-age period film. Based on a short story by Stephen King, Stand by Me deals with preteen concerns instead of teen ones. Director Rob Reiner successfully keeps the nostalgia and sentimentality in check; and he places a remarkable amount of faith in his young cast. Of the four leads, River Phoenix and Wil Wheaton deliver sensitive, complex performances which belie their age. Jerry O'Connell and teen heartthrob Corey Feldman round out the cast, and Kiefer Sutherland and John Cusack appear in small but memorable roles. For Reiner, the film was a significant shift in tone after the comedies This Is Spinal Tap (1984) and The Sure Thing (1985). It marked his first attempt at more serious fare; his success with the comedy drama of Stand by Me would pave the way for his later hits, When Harry Met Sally (1989) and Misery (1990).

    Wow...

This film brought me in tears. It's a good film that makes you think of how just simple boys even though they have a bad life, tend to bring the most of it. River Phoenix's acting is superb, and incredible. (He's one of my favorite actors.)
    This film is great because:
1.The boys tend to really bond together, and they make a great mix.
    2. The events are really captivating and life like,
    3. Acting=fantastic
    4. A lot of drama and emotion.
    5. The ending leaves you satisfied but you want the film to keep going.

Bottom line: Just watch it! :)

"Stand By Me" is a classic, that has just gotten better!

Stand by Me is one of my favorite movies of all time. I think that every boy around the age of twelve or thirteen should see this movie sometime or another in their lives. It is truly an amazing film, with great actors, a great script, and is just simply a great movie. However, this review is not on the movie itself, because I've just explained that. The Blu- ray transfer is what I want to talk about. The transfer is ineffable. It is simply amazing. Color is a big factor here, because the color is much more rich and stands out more. It is not as grainy as the previous DVD releases, and you really see the contours on the kids faces and you really see details of the movie that you really never noticed before. Buy this movie, you won't be sorry. Trust me!

    Best Movie Ever

This movie was sad and funny at the same time. I'm not a fan of very sad movies, but I love funny ones. This was a great mix, and it was very entertaining. I've watched it a ton of times, and it never gets old. You have to watch it, it's a classic!

    One of the best

This movie, and I know I am not alone, by far, when I say this, is one of my favourites. I watched when I was still and adolescent and it became a defining piece for me - it captures that time between being a child and being an adolescent, and all the confusion, and angst that come with it perfectly. Despite the fact that I grew up in a different time and a different country, I could still relate to it, because it is about common experiences (not that I ever went looking for a dead boy with my buddies).
The story (The Body) by Stephen King is superb, and the script funny and real. The casting was excellent, for me, it will always be the late River Phoenix who stands out - he will always be missed. He had such an amazing presence in this movie on screen, such charm, that it reminded me of James Dean. Well, that`s just me.
The directing is excellent, and the soundtrack, well, we all know that - amazing!
This movie will stand the test of time.

finally got to see this film

I always saw this on tv but never got to the part where they found the body. Finally i made a list of movies to see that i have always wanted to see when i was younger or have heard a lot about it. this is one of them and i must say it is a pretty good film. river was great in this and didn't recognize jerry in this as vern. totally unrecognizable. this is the story of friends that go in search of a dead body. along the way they encounter bullies, shivers....leeches and of course when they actually find the body. didn't remember seeing john cusack in this. feldman had such a mouth in this. his character in this and goonies as mouth are almost similar. the throwing up pie eating contest story scene was just gross yet funny at the same time....yay for lardass!!!!!

This is the best movie ever-PERIOD!

Rob Riner has created the best movie that has ever been filmed. Wil Wheaton, River Pheonix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connel have all given outstanding preformances. Since I bough it-actually it was a gift-and have watched it at least thirty times. BEST MOVIE EVER MADE! I'm twelve and that's how old you should be to watch it because all the boys are twelve and thirteen so you can relate to them very easily. It funny and heartwarming. You should be twelve, like I said, but it's only rated R because of swearing and teen drinking and smoking. BUY IT OR RENT IT!

    Excellent movie

This is one of the few movies I can watch over and over again without getting tired of it. This is an excellent example of people being born with talent and not receiving it later on in life (like many believe). It has an excellent story line and excellent acting. I wouldn't add or take anything away from it.

    I love Corey Feldman!

This was a great movie. I really liked Corey Feldmans character Teddy. And the song at the end of the movie is very sad. I liked this movie enough to watch it, rewind it and watch it again.

    Simplicity at it's finest!

A brillant character study surrounding a journey down a set of railroad tracks to find a dead body by a group of friends. It reflects the dicotomy of youth in it's raw emotion of ups and downs. The best.
