Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Sci-fi fans who saw the 1993 premiere of Deep Space Nine knew from the get-go that this Star Trek spin-off was something special, and its outstanding qualities are readily apparent in this six-disc collection of first-season episodes. Deep Space Nine is a Federation outpost belonging to the Bajorans, a race of spiritual people whose planet has recently been divested of an occupying army of Cardassians. To maintain the uneasy peace between these two races -- and others who travel to Bajoran space, the Federation relies on Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), a gifted officer charged with maintaining a multi-species force on the space station. Like all the Star Trek shows, Deep Space Nine is graced with a memorable group of characters whose individual personalities are explored in depth over the course of seven seasons. These include Security Chief Odo (Rene Auberjonois), Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor), Chief Operations Officer O'Brien (Colm Meaney), and Lieutenant Dax (Terry Farrell), among others. In addition to the character studies, this spin-off offers many episodes that involve complex chess games of intergalactic intrigue; indeed, some of the best shows are those in which Sisko and his crew are pitted against duplicitous aliens trying to outwit the Federation for political advantage. No simplistic space opera, this intelligently scripted, well-acted series is among the best genre offerings we've seen in some time. In addition to the 19 first-season episodes, the DS9 deluxe box set contains seven featurettes that include behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with cast and crew members, and glimpses of props, makeup creation, costumes, and set designs.
