Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Sci-fi fans who saw the 1993 premiere of Deep Space Nine knew from the get-go that this Star Trek spin-off was something special, and its outstanding qualities are readily apparent in this six-disc collection of first-season episodes. Deep Space Nine is a Federation outpost belonging to the Bajorans, a race of spiritual people whose planet has recently been divested of an occupying army of Cardassians. To maintain the uneasy peace between these two races -- and others who travel to Bajoran space, the Federation relies on Commander Benjamin Sisko Avery Brooks, a gifted officer charged with maintaining a multi-species force on the space station. Like all the Star Trek shows, Deep Space Nine is graced with a memorable group of characters whose individual personalities are explored in depth over the course of seven seasons. These include Security Chief Odo Rene Auberjonois, Major Kira Nerys Nana Visitor, Chief Operations Officer O'Brien Colm Meaney, and Lieutenant Dax Terry Farrell, among others. In addition to the character studies, this spin-off offers many episodes that involve complex chess games of intergalactic intrigue; indeed, some of the best shows are those in which Sisko and his crew are pitted against duplicitous aliens trying to outwit the Federation for political advantage. No simplistic space opera, this intelligently scripted, well-acted series is among the best genre offerings we've seen in some time. In addition to the 19 first-season episodes, the DS9 deluxe box set contains seven featurettes that include behind-the-scenes footage, interviews with cast and crew members, and glimpses of props, makeup creation, costumes, and set designs.

RE: KC, REAL trekie "Please let it rest in peace! IT'S DEAD!"

This person has absolutly NO clue as to what makes a good TV series, a good Star Trek spin-off, or a good plot. You see this series has what is call CHARACTER PROGRESSION. Not only is Deep Space 9 one of the most well written shows in history, it happens to be THE BEST Star Trek franchise EVER. It is quite aparent that "REAL trekie" is a closed minded right wing biggot who has no concept of what the Star Trek universe tries to portray. He/she is way off base with that "opinion".

    Don't Dismiss it

Just because Star Trek fans are typically teased, you should not snub your nose this show is GREAT. Just watch a few in a row and it just turns out to be a sci-fi version of a good soap opera. The characters have strong reactions to lost love and personal turmoil like any other good drama. It doesn't matter if you don't understand the technobabble! Just please, please give it a try.

This show truly is the best sci fi show ever and maybe the best TV show ever.

I know that it has been said time and again but truly this was the best. The characters had depth, changed, grew and had multiple sides to their characters (good and bad). The story arcs made sense and were complicated but in a realistic and interesting way. How refreshing!?! I really have missed the show and wish it would come back in the movies. But, alas it maybe too complicated for standard Hollywood fare.

    The other side of utopia

Deep space nine offers a look into the darker grittier underbelly of the future as opposed to the utopias in TOS and TNG. Themes merely hinted at in the previous series are investigated with more depth than any of the other series even dared. The story lines are ongoing and after the first season things really get going. It's a worthy investment for any fan of the series who likes their Trek a little more on the real side. I always wondered what a Trek world would be like with more human motivations involved (racism, greed, power, sex, love, revenge, war, religion, etc.) and DS9 delivers. It's more of a serial than loosely related episodes.

    Real Trekie?

If you are a real Trekie you will like this show. Even if it is the worst of the other Star Trek shows you should watch it because if you like star trek you will like this.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Rules

Deep Space Nine is the best of the Star Trek series, reaching a depth in terms of characters that none of the other ST series met. Its depiction of war was one of the most moving I've ever seen.

Please let it rest in peace! IT'S DEAD!

This is with out a doubt in my mind the worst Star Trek Series ever. Anyone who actually has standards should agree with me. But if you like disgusting, left-wing, and imoral plot lines you'll love it.

    Is it REALLY complete?

This set seems to be missing Episode Five: Babel. Why Is that? Without it, it's not complete.
