Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The 26 episodes of the 1995-96 season collected in this deluxe box set represent Deep Space Nine at its creative peak. Practically every show is noteworthy for one reason or another, and the cast members inhabit their characters' skins to a remarkable degree. Season 4 is distinguished by the cast addition of Michael Dorn's Worf, the Klingon commander who migrated to Deep Space Nine after Star Trek: The Next Generation left the air. Worf figures prominently in the two-part season opener, "The Way of the Warrior," which is one of the series' best stories. It begins as the Klingons attack Cardassia, annulling the existing peace treaty with Federation members and irrevocably shifting the sector's balance of power. With a full-scale Klingon insurgence pending, Worf is forced to decide, once and for all, which side he is on. Extremely well written, suspenseful, and character driven, the two-parter shows this Star Trek spin-off at its very best. Other notable episodes from this group include "The Visitor," "Rejoined," "Little Green Men," "Paradise Lost," and "Rules of Engagement." More than the previous seasons, this cycle reflects the care with which the writers, directors, and cast members gradually have modified the principal personae; without exception, the Deep Space Nine crew members are now multilayered characters whose passions, pursuits, and problems drive most of the story lines. Avery Brooks is in particularly fine fettle as Captain Benjamin Sisko; equally impressive are Nana Visitor as First Officer Kira Nerys, Rene Auberjonois as shape-shifting security chief Odo, Colm Meaney as chief engineer Miles O'Brien, Terry Farrell as officer Jadzia Dax, and Armin Shimerman as the crafty Quark.

    A Strong Fourth Season

In my opinion DS9 really became great in season 4. Season 3 was good, but it really picks up this season. The season opener, "The Way of the Warrior" is one of the strongest, and most engaging of the series. This trend continues throughout the season, all the way through the finale, "Broken Link", which once again sling-shots you right into the next season. The acting, and stories all improve this season as well. All in all season 4 of Deep Space NIne stands out as one of the top seasons of the show.
