Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - R.J. Wafer
When Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek finished its 79-episode run, one year shy of its "five-year mission," fans immediately began clamoring for a revival. But it wasn't until 1979 that Paramount boldly went big-screen with the franchise. Star Trek: The Motion Picture began a continuous stream of features and TV spin-off series, and the former are collected in the Star Trek Motion Pictures Gift Set. Director Robert Wise signed on for the first film, which reunites the original crew and adds such fresh faces as Stephen Collins (of TV's 7th Heaven) to the Enterprise's bridge. The movie was a hit and opened the floodgates to create what would soon become a pop-culture juggernaut. Often hailed as a Trekkie favorite, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) reintroduces the villainous Khan (Ricardo Montalban) from the TV series' 1967 episode "Space Seed." Khan captures the starship USS Reliant and takes command of the experimental Genesis device in order to exact his revenge upon Kirk (William Shatner) and the Enterprise crew. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) finds the crew of the USS Enterprise in a test of loyalty, as they disobey direct orders and return to the Genesis planet to revive their fallen comrade, Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy, who also directed). Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) follows the crew back in time to the 20th century on a search for an extinct species of whale that can help them save the future. In 1989's Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the Enterprise is lured to Nimbus III by a misguided Vulcan trying to secure passage to what he believes to be God. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) depicts the peace process between the Federation and the Klingons, and the resolution of unsettled grudges. Star Trek Generations (1994) focused on a changing of the guard, as the "classic" crew and the Next Generation crew worked together. The first full-fledged Next Generation film, Star Trek: First Contact (1996) has two story lines, with Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) again facing the evil Borg while William Riker (Jonathan Frakes, who also directed) travels back in time to ensure that the first-ever warp flight takes place. Also directed by Frakes, 1998's Star Trek: Insurrection finds the crew befriending the peaceful inhabitants of a utopian society and defending them against the vengeful Ru'afo.
