Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Paramount's ongoing mission to release all of the Next Generation programs on DVD continues with the 26 episodes originally broadcast during the 1989-90 season -- an especially strong group that includes some of the best efforts from this particular Trek's run. Season Three is notable for the increased maturity and sophistication with which serious issues are explored. "The High Ground" revolves around the kidnapping of Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) by radical terrorists who threaten to drag the entire Federation into a galactic civil war. "The Entry" finds Geordi (LeVar Burton) calling a truce and cooperating with a Romulan enemy in order to escape the storm-ravaged planet on which they've become stranded. In "Yesterday's Enterprise," the Enterprise's crew is confronted, via an interdimensional time warp, with an alternate reality in which the previously killed Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) is still alive. "The Best of Both Worlds, Part I," inaugurates the Next Generation tradition of ending a season with a cliff-hanger; in this suspenseful episode, Capt. Picard (Patrick Stewart) is captured by the Borg, who intend to conquer Earth. The episodes featured in this seven-disc set reflect the growing sophistication of TNG's writers, who truly found the groove in their third year, combining thought-provoking themes with character-driven space opera. Supplemental features in the Season Three box set include "Mission Overview," in which cast and crewmembers discuss major changes that occurred during the '89-90 season; "Selected Crew Analysis," which examines the ongoing evolution of the continuing characters and the return of Season One regular McFadden; "Departmental Briefing: Production," a behind-the-scenes look from the production crew's point of view; and "Departmental Briefing: Memorable Missions," which offers analysis of favorite episodes. With all 26 shows remastered in 5.1 Surround, this latest Next Generation collection is every bit as indispensable as Seasons One and Two.
