Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
The sixth season of The Next Generation’s seven-year run builds on the success of Season 5 -- a favorite of many Trekkies -- with imaginative plot and character developments. Once again there are several noteworthy guest appearances, including physicist Stephen Hawking as a poker-shark Holodeck version of himself, and Trek veteran James Doohan as Scotty, who is beamed up from a time-trap. There are also more episodes directed by cast member, such as Jonathan Frakes’s "The Chase," memorable to fans for its genetically plausible answer to the humanoid appearance of most of the show's species. In his ongoing quest to understand the nature of command, Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) twice finds himself removed from control of the Enterprise: first, he must relinquish authority when he's transformed into a child in "Rascals;" later, he learns the true depth of his crew’s fidelity after being kidnapped and tortured by Cardassian agents in "Chain of Command." Picard also gets to defend an abandoned Enterprise against interstellar thieves in "Spaceship Mine," which Trekkies have dubbed "the Die Hard episode." The background of Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) is explored in the western homage "A Fistful of Datas," and in "Birthright," a chronicle of the Klingon's search for his father that served as a crossover episode for the just-launched Deep Space Nine. As with prior TNG box sets, DVD extras include Mission Overview, Departmental Briefing: Production, and Memorable Missions.
