Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - R.J. Wafer
Call it the "real McCoy." Not to be confused with the nine-piece Motion Pictures Gift Set, this purist's collection compiles the six movies featuring the familiar stand-by cast of the original Star Trek series. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, and Nichelle Nichols are the faces that started it all -- the faces that are now as inseparable from popular culture as the phrase "beam me up." Directed by the venerable Robert Wise, the first film reunites the original crew and adds such fresh faces as Stephen Collins of TV's 7th Heaven to the Enterprise's bridge. Often hailed as a Trekkie favorite, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan 1982 reintroduces the villainous Khan Ricardo Montalban from the TV series' 1967 episode "Space Seed." Khan captures the starship USS Reliant and takes command of the experimental Genesis device in order to exact his revenge upon Kirk William Shatner and the Enterprise crew. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock 1984 finds the crew of the USS Enterprise in a test of loyalty, as they disobey direct orders and return to the Genesis planet to revive their fallen comrade, Mr. Spock Leonard Nimoy, who also directed. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home 1986 follows the crew back in time to the 20th century on a search for an extinct species of whale that can help them save the future. In 1989's Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the Enterprise is lured to Nimbus III by a misguided Vulcan trying to secure passage to what he believes to be God. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country 1991 depicts the peace process between the Federation and the Klingons, and the resolution of unsettled grudges.

I like director's cuts and commentaries. My understanding is that this box set is out-of-print (replaced by a 2009 box set), that this box set has director's cuts vs. the 2009's theatrical versions, and that the 2009 commentaries are relatively useless because, except for 1 movie, they were done by people NOT actually involved in the production of the films. Sergio Leone's biographer provided excellent commentaries (imo) for Leone's films, even though the biographer wasn't involved with producing the films, but based on what I've read elsewhere, that isn't the case with the Star Trek 2009 release commentaries.

I own this box set, not the 2009 release. While I wouldn't characterize these commentaries as 'the best I've ever heard', at least they were done by people involved in each film's production, so logic dictates (thank you, Mr. Spock) their value is higher than those on the 2009 release.

Add the director's cuts, and it was a no-brainer for me to decide which set to buy.

Usually, the newer the release, the better the picture quality. The 2009 dvd set was released to co-incide with the first blu-ray release, so there is a good chance that the 2009 set has better audio/video than this 2004 set. How much better? I have no idea. But since this 2004 box set was the second generation of Star Trek dvd releases, and they were a great improvement from the original late 90's dvd's, I figure the difference can't be that much.

So, I chose content and extras over a (presumably) slight improvement in audio/video. You'll have to decide for yourself which box set to buy. For me, this 2004 release is 5 stars, and the 2009 release would probably be 3 stars because of the commentary and movie cut differences.

P.S. Many thanks to BN for providing excellent information about this box set. I used it to decide which box set to purchase: this 2004 set, or the newer 2009 set. I wish all sellers provided this level of detail!!!

    BEAM ME UP SCOTTIE!

HAVE BEEN AN STAR TREK FAN ALL MY LIFE SINCE IT'S BEEN OUT THERE. LOVE ALL THE MOTIONS PICTURES BASED ON THE ORIGINAL SERIES IN PARTICULAR. HOPING SOME DAY, THOUGH, THEY WILL HAVE A STANDARD SCREEN VERSION OUT IN DVD AS NOT EVERYONE HAS THE SCREEN AT HOME TO VIEW WIDE SCREEN VERSIONS.
