Overview

The DVD release of what many fans consider the best season of the original Star Trek series continues the high standards set by not only the outstanding season one release but by all Trek box set releases. With its 26 episodes spread out over seven discs (each presented with razor-sharp picture quality and a super Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround Sound audio mix), this season two set boldly goes with some of the series' most memorable stories. Classics included here are the alternate universe where good is bad and Spock has a goatee, "Mirror, Mirror, the timeless favorite "Trouble With Tribbles, and "Journey to Babel, which introduced the character of Spock's father, Sarek, played by Mark Lenard. The set's seventh disc finds the usual outstanding assortment of bonus features, although not as many as graced the box set for the first season. Things kick off with a beautifully made overview of the season titled, "To Boldly Go...Season Two" which features interviews with all of surviving cast and crew members as they reflect on season two's high points and its impact on the Star Trek franchise. "Life Beyond Trek: Leonard Nimoy" features actor Leonard Nimoy speaking about his many years as the pointy-eared pop-culture icon Spock as well as his life and directing career outside of the series. "Kirk, Spock, & Bones, Star Trek's Great Trio" thoughtfully examines the three characters and features interviews with Nimoy and William Shatner as they discuss the characters and the complex dynamics between them. "Star Trek's Divine Diva: Nichelle Nichols" showcases actress Nichelle Nichols in several interviews on her character of Uhura and the positive impact of her being one the first African-American regulars on a science fiction television show in the 1960s. A featurette on the show's design, production art, a photo gallery, trailers, and several hidden Easter eggs close out this exceptional DVD release that is a welcome addition to any Trekkie's collection.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The 1967-68 season of the original Star Trek featured some of the best sci-fi stories broadcast on television up to that time. Series creator Gene Roddenberry made occasional concessions to the network by supplying some action-oriented episodes that smacked of immature "space opera," but mainly he presented unusually fine, character-driven stories. The season opener, "Amok Time," was a showcase for Leonard Nimoy's Mr. Spock, the Vulcan first officer whose emotions come to the fore as he begins to manifest the mating impulses of his species. "Who Mourns for Adonis?" was Star Trek's first exploration of a popular sci-fi supposition: that the creatures believed by ancient humans to be gods were actually aliens with unusual powers. "The Doomsday Machine" featured guest star William Windom as the Ahab-like commander of the Enterprise's doomed sister ship, obsessed with destroying the seemingly indestructible weapon that killed his crew. "The Ultimate Computer" showed the starship's officers and crew under great strain while deploying an experimental computer system intended to obviate them. Other memorable episodes among the 26 collected here on eight discs: "Mirror, Mirror," in which Captain Kirk William Shatner, Spock, Scotty James Doohan, and Uhura Nichelle Nichols find themselves transported to a parallel universe; "Assignment: Earth," an unsuccessful spin-off attempt for a series that would have starred Robert Lansing as Gary Seven and Teri Garr as his secretary; and "The Trouble with Tribbles," a comedic romp that became one of the series' most popular installments.

Must Have for Star Trek Fans

This really is a "must have" for your Star Trek collection. There's no "Trek" like original Trek and all the improvements in no way detract from what the shows were originally.

    I Also Recommend:

Star Trek Season 2 was the best of the Seasons

I bought this as a gift for my Father for Father's Day since he is a huge Old School Trek fan, anyway he said that he loved it so much he had already watched the whole Season twice already.
The Documentaries were very informative especially the one where Leonard Nimoy talked about how the, "I AM NOT SPOCK", book almost cost him getting to direct the Third Star Trek film beacuse there was so much negative feedback from the book which caused the then time head of Paramount pictures to decline to let him direct Star Trek III because he was under the impression that Nimoy hated being Spock, which wasn't the case.
The new special effects shots are awesome and even the old footage seems to be cleaned up a bit.
Season 2 does have my two favorite episdoes on it: "THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE", wait till you see the new effects shots in that it will blow you away and,"A PIECE OF THE ACTION", which I thought was really funny.

In conclusion I would reccommend Star Trek Season 2 the Remastered Edition to anyone who has a hard core Star Trek fan in their family, or to someone who just enjoys watching the old Star Trek episodes. In my case both apply.

star trek original series season 2 updated

I have to say I was dissapointed in this. Although the actual character scenes look good, with digitized clean up, the exteriors did not. The enterprise looks good, but in trying to integrate it into old scenes , it looks more amateurish than the original format. This is particurlarly true in the doomsday machine episode.
A minor irritation was that set did not have all of the descriptor cards included, it had a replicated #2.
