Overview

Continue the journey into the deepest reaches of space with this feature-packed release from Paramount Pictures -- truly a must-have for any science fiction buff. With episodes presented as they originally aired in 1.33:1 full-frame and audio rendered in English Dolby Digital 5.1, this seven-disc set's wealth of bonus materials will have Star Trek fans clamoring to buy it. Beginning with "Braving the Unknown: Season 2," executive producers Rick Berman, Michael Piller, Jeri Taylor, and Brannon Braga discuss the ways in which they up the ante from season one while citing some of the season's more compelling episodes. "Voyager Time Capsule: Tuvok" offers an exclusive interview with cast member Tim Russ in which he discusses his other creative endeavors and plays a live set for viewers, and "Saboteur Extraordinare: Seska" features an interview with Martha Hackett, the actress who portrays the recurring titular character of that episode. The revealing interviews keep coming with "A Day in the Life of Ethan Phillips," and after taking a look at the science behind-the-scenes with "Real Science With Andre Bormanis," viewers can catch a glimpse into the special-effects process with "Red Alert: Visual Effects Season 2." Rounding things out are some "Lost Transmissions From the Delta Quadrant," in which Kate Mulgrew, Robert Picardo, Dan Curry, and Brannon Braga discuss their involvement with the series; a trivia track for the episode "The 37's"; and a photo gallery.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The second season of this popular Star Trek spin-off was likely its best, fleshing out the characters and exploring novel situations in a series of well-written episodes. The various spawn of Gene Roddenberry's groundbreaking sci-fi series generally eschewed simplistic space opera in favor of character-driven stories that found the principals grappling with ethical conflicts. Perhaps the most pronounced of these seen in Season 2 occurs in "Tuvix," in which a transporter malfunction fuses Lt. Tuvok (Tim Russ) and Neelix (Ethan Phillips) into one dysfunctional being. This poses a dilemma for Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew): Does she try to preserve both life forms, rehabilitate the hybrid, or simply terminate him? "Meld," another strong episode, finds Tuvok trying to comprehend the thought processes of a psychopathic killer (played by guest star Brad Dourif) and getting his own mind twisted in the process. In "Resistance," Janeway's resolve is tested, and we learn just how far she's willing to go to protect her ship and crew. These are only a few of the many fine installments in Season 2, which introduced Voyager viewers to Seven of Nine, the statuesque half-human, half-machine, ex-Borg officer portrayed by Jeri Ryan. Seven became a fan favorite who played an increasingly larger role in Voyager's adventures as the series went on, but in these 26 episodes she's simply one of many finely drawn characters. Thoughtful, provocative, and always engaging, Voyager's Season 2 shows constitute the core of this excellent addition to the Star Trek franchise.
