Stargate Sg-1: Season 2

( 8 )

Overview

Each Stargate SG-1: Season Two episode includes the television preview and five chapter cues. Three of the discs offer brief featurettes about specific elements of the series. Disc one features a seven-minute profile of production designer Richard Hudolin, which combines quick interview clips with footage. While unfortunately being too short and promotional, this piece does nicely present Hudolin's ideas and their incorporation into each story. Disc four contains a nine-minute feature on Michael Shanks and his ...

Disc four contains a nine-minute feature on Michael Shanks and his character, Dr. Daniel Jackson. Backed by the usual narrator, we learn about the character's beginnings and his progression, with shots from later seasons also presented. Disc five includes a similar ten-minute profile of Teal'c and actor Christopher Judge. It follows the promotional route, but does provide some interesting tidbits from the well-spoken actor. Stargate SG-1 originally aired on Showtime in a full-frame format, but these episodes utilize a 1.78:1 widescreen anamorphic transfer. Even considering its television origins, certain shots are just too hazy and lack the pristine clarity of the better transfers. The digital effects and outdoor scenes are often impressive, but too many subpar moments exist. This release offers a simple but effective 5.1 channel Dolby Surround track that presents the powerful score nicely through the front speakers. The credits sequence sounds excellent, and the explosions and Stargate effects spring well from the transfer. Limitations do exist due to the television source material, which prevents a more complex presentation from the rear sections.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
If you thought you'd seen the last of Colonel Jack O'Neill after director Roland Emmerich's 1994 blockbuster Stargate, you were sadly mistaken. In the able hands of creators Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright Outer Limits, Stargate has become a thriving television enterprise, consistently offering up imaginative plotlines and old-school sci-fi entertainment. Colonel O'Neill played with charismatic flair by MacGyver star Richard Dean Anderson leads Air Force Team SG-1 through a series of interstellar portals, or "Stargates," keeping the galactic balance in check as they sail through time. Two of the second season's finer hours are "Thor's Hammer," in which O'Neill and his crew's battle with the Goa'ulds leads them to Cimmeria, home of the Norse Gods; and "Within the Serpent's Grasp," the season finale, which finds SG-1 cruising at the speed of light aboard an enemy craft, unable to return to Earth as an alien invasion looms. This five-disc set compiles all 21 episodes from Stargate's sophomore run and is a formidable follow-up to the show's breakthrough season.

    Great

The movie was okay - but not good enough to make we want to watch the series. Until about a year ago, when I started watching it when was on the same night as the new Battlestar Galactica. I quickly realized how much I was missing. And the best part is, because of these DVDs, I can catch up on it all straight from the beginning. I've bought the first couple of seasons now, and can't wait to keep going. This really is a great show and I can't believe I've ignored it all these years.

    FIVE STARS NOT ENOUGH!

My husband got me hooked on Stargate SG-1. I hardly watch anything else! If I'm not watching it on Sci-Fi, then I'm watching it on DVD.

    GREAT SHOW!

This is really a great show. If you find that you like this sci-fi series, (and I know you will) then buy farscape season 1, it is the only sci-fi show better than SG1. Remember that both of these series make the perfect gift (christmas is just around the corner).

    This Series is Crazy Good

SG-1 is incredible. Imagine one-third part Stargate the movie, one-third part Contact the movie, and one-third part StarTrek... Possibly the best sci-fi created since X-Files.
