Overview

While most of the releases in BCI Eclipse's "Starlite Drive-In" DVD series have featured two low-budget opuses from the archives of Crown International Pictures, for this package BCI went the extra mile and included three features -- or more accurately, two-and-a-half. For this release, BCI have included both the cracked 1963 espionage thriller Madmen of Mandoras and its better-known expanded version They Saved Hitler's Brain, in which most of the footage from Madmen is combined with new material shot on the cheap in 16mm that doesn't match the original movie in any way, shape or form. Both versions of the movie are included on a single double-sided disc, and both appear in their original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The print of Madmen of Mandoras used for this release looks sharp and well detailed, while the source materials for They Saved Hitler's Brain are considerably muddier, though some might argue that's appropriate given the tone of the movie. Madmen can be played with a "Drive-In Experience" option, in which the feature is preceded with a collection of trailers, cartoons and drive-in snack bar adverts, while Hitler's Brain instead features a gallery of four trailers (one of which also appears on the flip side of the disc) and a menu of chapter stops. A second disc contains the third feature in this package, The Devil's Hand, which has also been transferred in its original full-frame ratio of 1.33:1 from a clean, sharp print. The film looks great in this presentation, though the audio doesn't fare as well in the early reels, with some audible high-end distortion. Like Madmen of Mandoras, The Devil's Hand can be played back with the "Drive-In Experience" options. All the films in this set are in English, with no subtitles or multiple language options included. For many fans of strange cinema, the double-bill of both versions of Madmen of Mandoras would be reason enough to buy this set; the addition of a fine rarity like The Devil's Hand adds icing to the cake of this great value for adventurous movie buffs.
