Starlite Drive-in Theater: Van Nuys Blvd. / Little Laura and Big John

Overview

Two very different examples of Seventies exploitation fare -- a sexy teen-oriented comedy and a period crime drama set in the deep South -- are paired up on this double-feature DVD from BCI Eclipse's "Starlite Drive-In" series. The comedy Van Nuys Blvd. has been given a widescreen transfer to disc, letterboxed at the 1.78:1 aspect ratio on conventional televisions and enhanced for anamorphic play on 16x9 monitors. On the flip side of this two-sided disc, Little Laura and Big John, concerning an outlaw couple in ...

DVD Brand New 6 This collection presents a double feature of 1970s drive-in classics: VAN NUYS BLVD. (1979) follows the wacky exploits of a small-town teen who moves to L.A. to ... cruise the city's main drag; while LITTLE LAURA & BIG JOHN (1973) dramatizes the real-life story of the criminal Ashley gang, who roared through the 1920s in a blazing trail of bank robberies, rumrunning, and murder.

On the flip side of this two-sided disc, Little Laura and Big John, concerning an outlaw couple in the 1920's, has been given a pan-and-scan transfer at the full-screen ratio of 1.33:1. Both movies look good on disc, though Van Nuys Blvd. looks brighter and sharper on this release while Little Laura often reveals the limitations of its penny-pinching production design and camerawork. The audio for both movies has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo (retailing the original monophonic sound mixes for each film), and some distortion is audible for both, sometimes sounding as if the audio is going in and out of phase. Both pictures are in English, with no subtitles or multiple language options. Both features can be played back using a "Drive-In Experience" options so that the movies are preceded by previews for other movies, concession stand spots and cartoons. Van Nuys Blvd. also gets an additional bonus, an optional commentary track in which writer and director William Sachs shares his memories of working on the picture. Overall, this disc delivers an odd pairing of movies from the Crown International Pictures library, but both are as well-served as they're ever likely to be on DVD, and folks with a taste for vintage low-budget thrills will doubtless be satisfied with this offering.
