Starsky & Hutch: the Complete First Season

Overview

This 1970s cop show makes a stylish return to form on DVD thanks to Columbia TriStar Entertainment. This generous package compiles the original pilot film and all 22 episodes from the show's first season. The visual quality is generally quite good; some episodes show stretches of wear and tear due to their age, but the video transfers are generally colorful and sharp. The audio sticks to the original mono mixes of the show; they're nothing spectacular by modern standards but they deliver the dialogue and all the ...

The audio sticks to the original mono mixes of the show; they're nothing spectacular by modern standards but they deliver the dialogue and all the flavorful period music in a reasonably crisp style. The disc's producers have also thrown on some nice bonuses for the show's fans. The first disc has a collection of the TV spots used to promote each episode. These fun ads are usually narrated by Paul Michael Glaser and most play like vintage exploitation film trailers. The final disc showcases a variety of documentary featurettes. An especially short one on the 2004 feature-film version of the show is the throwaway puff piece one might expect, but "The Third Star" is an amusing short about one fan's obsession with the show's famous Ford Torino, and the self-deprecating "It's Harder Than It Looks" is an amusing guide to the goofs and flubs that periodically pop up in the first season's episodes. However, the best of the batch is "Behind the Badge"; this excellent half-hour documentary utilizes new interviews with Glaser, David Soul, and creator William Blinn to create a definitive portrait of the show's genesis. All in all, Starsky & Hutch: The Complete First Season is a great way to get acquainted with this hard-hitting TV favorite.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Overshadowed on producer Aaron Spelling's '70s resume by Charlie's Angels, the seminal cops-and-robbers show Starsky & Hutch makes its welcome emergence from the guilty-pleasure time capsule in this five-DVD set, timed to coincide with the release of the big-screen hit that it inspired. A success pretty much from its Wednesday night debut on ABC September 10, 1975, the drama features Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul as Dave Starsky and Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson, undercover cops with a knack for collaring scum in the city's roughest neighborhoods. Tough-guy Starsky and the more softspoken Hutch -- Soul's pop single "Don't Give Up On Us Baby" hit No. 1 in 1977 -- were perpetually driving Capt. Dobey Bernie Casey into fits with their disregard for the rules. And somehow, their chief snitch, bar owner Huggy Bear Antonio Fargas, managed to provide a steady stream of information, despite what local thugs must have recognized as his unusually cozy relationship with the white detectives in the shiny red car. Speaking of which, the 1974 Gran Torino with the Nike-like swoosh must be parked in the pantheon of TV's automotive giants, a four-wheeled forerunner of The Dukes of Hazzard's General Lee and Knight Rider's KITT. Filled with car chases, borderline police brutality, and buddy bonding to beat the boys in the band by the odd-couple costars, Starsky & Hutch commanded a sizable audience, especially in this first season. It's also a load of fun for before-they-were-stars sightings, beginning with Suzanne Somers appearance in the first episode, "Savage Sunday." Her future Three's Company roomie, John Ritter, turns up near the end of the season in "The Hostages." Attentive viewers will also spot such faces as George Dzundza in "Snowstorm", Geoffrey Lewis "The Fix", Art Hindle "The Deadly Imposter", Norman Fell "Shootout", and, in the season-closing "Bounty Hunter," Doodles Weaver!

The red and white striped Gran Torino roars again

I remember Starsky and Hutch from my childhood, never having watched a show. In the early 90's I saw Starsky and Hutch on TV. I really liked it. When season one was released I ran out and got it. It became a show for me and my wife to become addicted to. We watched an episode a day. I really like this show. There is chemistry between Starsky and Hutch that makes the show more interesting than your average cops and robber show. The action is realistic and exciting.

I've been waiting for years for this!

Starsky and Hutch, season 1, brings back all the fond memories of my teenage television habits and experiences. In the 1970's I couldn't get enough Starsky and Hutch memorabilia. I've waited for years for this program to be released on VHS/DVD to add to my collection of photos, books, magazine clippings and cassette tapes (yes, I taped the show on my old-time cassette recorder!) I pre-ordered my copy and everyone in my household has enjoyed it. I am ordering season 2 immediately!

    Reliving my youth

I was just blown away by this show back in 1975 and I love it just as much today. I would have never dreamed almost 30 years later I would be able to sit at my t.v. again and watch my favorite show of all time. It's just too bad this type of police dramas could not be wrote again. It is a show that I can sit and watch and not worry about my child seeing or hearing something too offensive. This is a must have for anyone who loved this show.
