Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The second group of episodes from this popular '70s cop show is heavier on character development than the preceding season, with some surprisingly weighty situations unfolding along with the expected fights, shootouts, and car chases. By now, Paul Michael Glaser as Dave Starsky and David Soul as Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson have settled into their roles; their banter is less forced and their affection for each other seems genuine. Their favorite informant, Huggy Bear Antonio Fargas, is not yet the cartoonish figure he will become, and he figures more prominently than he did in Season 1. Additionally, the relationship between the two plainclothes detectives develops more believably than in the earlier episodes. In "Gillian," Starsky is forced to break the news to lovestruck Hutch that his new girlfriend is actually a high-class call girl. "Bloodbath" directed by Glaser finds Hutch racing against time to rescue his recently kidnapped partner. The same kind of nail-biting suspense is employed in "Survival," which has Starsky looking everywhere for his missing partner, who's seriously injured and trapped beneath a wrecked car. But there are plenty of lighter moments as well, most of them deriving from the team's often ludicrous forays undercover: In this group of episodes you'll see the detectives disguised as high-rolling gamblers, movie stuntmen, and cruise directors, among other things. The Season 2 episodes -- collected on five discs in this box set -- are uniformly entertaining, and very likely represent the series at its zenith.
