One day, on her way to work, Stephen's assistant falls to her death in the London Underground. Later, just as it's revealed that Stephen and his assistant were having an affair at the time of her death, the body of a suspected teenage drug dealer is discovered. At first it appears that these two events are completely unrelated, but a closer look reveals some deeply disturbing information about political and corporate interests becoming hopelessly intertwined. Now, as the lies, manipulations, and deceptions gradually boil to the surface, lives will be lost and friendships put to the ultimate test.     Engrossing

    I had seen the American movie with Russell Crowe and really enjoyed that, so when I found the original British version I wanted to see this as well. I enjoyed this version as much as the American movie and would highly recommend both. The unraveling of the story with its plot twists keep you on the edge of your chair. Don't miss this one.

    Best BBC Mini-Series!

    The story unfolds just like a great book, page by page. Why Hollywood thought that it could turn it into a 2-hour movie is beyond me. The "mini-series" format allows enough time to develop the characters as well as the mystery which is the heart of the story. Paul Abbot wrote such great characters, that it is a shame he has not written another story for them. He has stated that he attempted to write a sequel, but never completed it. My only hope is that someday, he will return to those characters and give us another great series to watch.
    How to describe the plot without revealing too much? I shall try: Journalists reporting on their respective stories discover a common denominator. Violent crimes, alleged drug dealers, illicit romantic affairs, and political manipulations are all parts of the tangled, woven web. At the center is Cal, a journalist and former campaign manager to Steven, an MP. Cal goes after the story, perhaps allowing his personal history with Steven to cloud his judgement. Eventually the truth is revealed, but at an ultimate cost. There is suspense, romance, and humor: the episodes go by too soon.
    Top-notch actors: John Simm, David Morrissey, Philip Glenister, Bill Nighy, Kelly MacDonald, Marc Warren and James McAvoy each play their role superbly.
    If have seen the American version of State of Play, you owe it to yourself to watch this original BBC version. The original is far, far superior. If you enjoyed the American version, you should still watch this one.

    Taut Drama From Beginning To End

    This BBC mini-series is the basis for the Hollywood film starring Russell Crowe. The series is much more of a journalistic procedural thriller than the film. Six hours is plenty of time to get involved in characters and develop minor roles. I especially liked the journalist Della Smith (Kelly MacDonald). Bill Nighy was (of course) fantastic.
