Overview

A man struggling to save the life of another finds himself drawn into a strange netherworld he didn't know existed in this stylish thriller. Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor) is a psychiatrist living in New York City with his girlfriend, Lila Culpepper (Naomi Watts), who was once one of his patients. However, it's another one of his patients who becomes the focus of his obsessions when Henry Letham (Ryan Gosling), a disturbed young man whom Foster took over from a colleague, announces during a session that he intends to commit suicide in three days, on his 21st birthday. Sam takes the threat quite seriously and tries to track down Henry, who seems to have disappeared. Sam speaks to a number of Henry's friends and acquaintances -- his mother (Kate Burton), the man he claimed was his father, Dr. Leon Patterson (Bob Hoskins), a waitress who regularly served Henry at the coffee shop where she works (Elizabeth Reaser), and his former therapist Dr. Beth Levy (Janeane Garofalo). As Sam talks to people in Henry's circle, he finds he's learning more about himself than the man he's supposed to save, and he begins to drift into an emotional netherworld where the supposedly dead and the living cross paths. Stay was directed by Marc Forster, who had previously enjoyed breakthrough hits with two very different films, Monster's Ball and Finding Neverland.

This film was not an "easy" watch...it made me anxious and a bit confused at times...but always engaged in trying to determine the true nature of the events portrayed. It had been quite a while since I saw a movie that lead to interesting, thought-provoking discusions. The ending was profound.

It's a movie with a twist on the end. It definitely makes you think and then it's like "whoah". It can be confusing at times, but I just think that's cause it needs to be watched again. I definitely thought the movie was worth it. I like the way it was put together.

This is a wonderful movie for movie buffs - especially if you enjoy indie or foreign films (though this one is neither). It is thought provoking and needs to be followed carefully. If you like to be led by the nose then this one is not for you but if you like to think and be lead down alternative paths then ENJOY.

The first time I saw this movie I was convinced until the end that it was a real happening. It reminded me of The Sixth Sense and I was spellbound. Watching it on cable and then on regular tv was not as good as having the dvd. My daughter whom I purchased it for found it to be as intriging as I have. A well done movie.

I am a big Ewan MacGregor fan and was really looking forward to this movie. I was very disappointed. I came away from it feeling like I had just wasted 1 hour and 40 minutes of my life. The whole thing was pointless. Stay away.

Not as good as Mulholland Dr., but then again, what is? But if you liked Mulholland Dr. you'll like this.
