Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Steve Reynolds
Steely Dan's songs are always engaging, but Donald Fagen and Walter Becker usually seem somewhat detached and aloof from the music they produce. The duo -- on the heels of its first new album release in nearly 20 years -- presents a more down-to-earth facade in this new video, 2 Against Nature: Steely Dan's Plush TV Jazz-Rock Party in Hi-Fi Stereo. The 101-minute-long program serves up their immensely popular music and chases it with their extremely dry sense of humor. The performances of songs like "Peg," "Josie" "Cousin Dupree" and "FM," are just as polished as the studio versions, but that professionalism is countered by the amateurish, self-deprecating quality of the off-stage action. For instance: The mock interviews Becker and Fagen conduct with their backing band look like outtakes from a cable-access show. We're treated to a New York City concert promoter's explanation as to why many of the musicians he books have a beef with the duo. There are also some not-so-knowledgeable fans who talk about their love of Steely Dan (one suggests that she became hooked on the band when they released "Year of the Cat"). This video is a great look into the world of Steely Dan -- you'll not only be humming the songs, you'll be laughing with the men who make them.
