Overview

A youngster learns some important lessons about being different from those around you in this animated adaptation of Janell Cannon's book for children. Stellaluna is a young fruit bat who gets lost and can't find her mother. Not knowing how to get home, Stellaluna is befriended by a family of birds, and she soon grows close to the hatchlings as if they're her siblings; however, even if Stellaluna can fly like a bird, it becomes increasingly obvious that she's a different sort of critter with different ways of doing things. Can Stellaluna learn to be more like her friends, or will she hold on to the qualities that make her what she is?

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Janell Cannon's endearing picture book -- a young fruit bat separated from her mother after an owl attack -- takes wing in this animated Scholastic production. Stellaluna lands in a bird's nest, where the mother bird agrees to take the little fruit bat under her wing, "provided she behaves like a good bird should." That means eating bugs (yeech), not hanging upside-down, and sleeping at night (when Stellaluna likes to fly). Birds and fruit bats will discover and learn to appreciate what makes them "so different, and yet so alike." And, since this isn't old-school Disney, mother and daughter are even reunited by program's end. The 3-D animation evokes the lush forest setting, and the music is pleasant (this DVD edition offers a sing-along option). New characters -- an aspiring superhero jumping spider and two toucans with a penchant for makeovers -- provide some comic relief. But the heart of Cannon's story shines through.
